IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATE S.

The'Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.

To all whom it mel/y concern Be it known that I, ALBERT J. POTTER, of Omaha,

in the county of Douglas, and State of Nebraska, havev invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm- Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to thel accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification, in which is represented a perspective view of my gate.

The nature of my invention consists inthe employ ment 'of a bevel-wheel, gearing into a segment of another bevel-wheel, in connection with cordsfor opening and closing the gate, when arranged as hereinafter described.

To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawing- A represents an ordinary gate.

On each end of the end post a of the gate Aare secured journals b b', by which the gate is pivoted.

The journal b is passed through a hole made in the plate c, driven in the ground, and the journal b', through a hole made in the shoulder c formed on the bar O.

On the upper end of the end post a'is secured a bevel-wheel, D, gearing intothe segment of another bevel-wheel, D', attached to one'end of the shaft d,

which passes through the cylindrical bar @secured to the upper end of the main post B.

On the other end of the sh' ft (l, a lever, E, is attacl1ed,which is provided, at its upper end', with a hole, v

through which the cords c fg pass.

The cord e is attached to the upper end of the lever F, which is pivoted at its lower end to the gate, and fastened to the bolt F.

The cords f g are passed through holes in the metal plates f g', secured to the upper end of the posts BZBS.

The bolt F is provided with a spiral spring, h, the object of which will be hereinafter described.

On each of the posts B B2 B3 are secured metal plates on., with a hole in the centre to receive the bolt F', the plates on the posts B2 B3 being provided with a flange, so as to prevent the 'gate from swinging past the posts 'B2 B3 when it is opened.

Having thus fully described my invention,
