IMPROVEMENT IN GATES. s
litige ttetulr triennio tu in tlgrse trttert rtent rut limiting rut rif-11p. sume.
TOv ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Beit knownthat we, JOHNA. Ennesimo and'RIonARn TA'iTERsnALL, of Beloit, Wisconsin, -have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full-and complete description thereof, reference being had to the aecompanyingdrawings and let'ters'oi` reference marked thereon, whichare a; part of this specification. Y
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the gate taken from the inside approach to the street.
Figure 2 isa side view of the double-inclined plane J and pitmen Figure 3 is a vertical View of iig. 2. l
Figure 4 is a side view of the ratchet e.
Figure 5 is aside view of "the pulley D,'pa w l E, and stopf.
Figure 6 is aperspective view of. the double pulley- D d,..paW'l/E, and stop f.
Figure 7 is a. front view of the latch-post N, latches n, and stop pl Figure 8 is a side view of g.`7.
A A A A represent the main frame of the gate. l
B B are central standards of the gate, hung-upon the tracks J Jby the grooved rollers-I and, attached to the post-of the main frame by the hinges and yeyes fm. m.
i b b are horizontal bars orrods pnssing'through the standards 13,' and connected'to the gate-frame b 6'; J' J are circular doubleinclined planes, upon which the rollers I I travel in opening andclosing the gates. The circular double-inclined planes J J are sofconstructed thatthe rollers I I traverse a down grade from the ends to the centre pivot,;on which the said planes oscillate, thence to the ends on level planes in either opening or closing-the gates.'` Thee outerend's of'dthe circlilareplanes are provided with stops to prevent the rollers I I from running off the ends of the said planes. l
The horizontal shaft'C .C is provided with drunks, c e', which are attached to the'inner ends of the planes by pitmen K K. I
The double pulleyD d, provided withv the-pawl E, stopf, and weight G, revolve loosely upon the shaft C C,- tc`which is rigidlyf'aixed the ratchet e which pulley vis actuated by the cords t and weight The pullposts L L are placed atsuitable distancesfrom the gate. The cords t h are secured at opposite points in the grooved periphery of the pulley D, each of which passes' aroundone-half of the circumference of said pulleyY thence in opposite directionsj'o the posts `L L, thence through. suitable pulleys connected to the caps of said posts, leaving the pulls H H of said cords '7th pendent therefrom. .The circular planes are supported by the .a1-ms() O. The gates are held closed byl the latches n n, which are secured to thev posts N by suitable bolts.'
In closing, the catches attached to the frame -of the 'gate 6 b pass under the latches n n, and in opening, the gates are raised above the said latches.,
The gateslmay be held open by a similar device.
The post N is'provided with suitable-stopsdop, to secure the proper operation of said latches.l v
` The gate is-operatedby 'a downward pull of the cords .7a 'z, causing theA paivl E, aflixed to the pulley D d, .to engage with the rigid ratchet attached to the shai'tC C, when, the pulling-force being'continued, the shaft is reyolvcd. The cranks'being moved forward and upiwardpor A,in the line of an arc, actuate the pitmen, which` thus Vraises the inward ends of theinclined planes, by the -same operation slidingthe gates upward, liftingl them out ef the latches 'n 'n and winding vup the weight G, thereby putting the gates lin position to open freely by their own gravity. On'releasing the cord Iz, the weight G rotates the pulley D ol to its normal position.
` The lgate is opened and ciosedby repeating the operation `from either approach..
What we claim as Aour invention, and desire tosecureby Letters'Patent, is=
1, Wc claim broadly the employment 'of the doublepullcy D ai, pawl ratchet e, weight G, and cords h l, when constructed, arranged,.and operated for the purpose of operating a gate orgates.` v .2. We claim broadly the circular inclined plane J, when constructed and arranged substantially as herein set forth and described, for: the purpose'speeifed; but wedo not claim as new the oscillating-plane J, for 'that has already been secured to us by Letters Patent of the United States.
3.-*We claim the latches 1t fn, and stopsp p, i'n combination with the inclined planes JJ, shaft C C, cranks c c, pulley D. d, cords t L, weight Gr, gate-standards B B, rods b b', and rollers I I, when the whole isfconstructed and arranged to operate substantially as hereindescribed. JOHN A. vBURCI-IARD, RICHARD yI'ITERSHALL.
