Description

J. S. JEWETT.
Gate.
Patented Sept. 1. 1868.

JAS R-s. ,JEWETT, 0 OTTAWA, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 81,640, dated September 1, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-GATE.
fillgt'gtllthhlt marsh in in time Eaters new mm mttiugpart at flge strut;
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, JASPER'S. JEWETT, of Ottawa, in the county of La Sallc, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Fence-Gate; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact I description thereof, reference being had to theaecompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The natureof my invention consists in so" constructing a fence-gate, that to open and 'close the same it will not be necessary to cross the path, which isioften inconvenient on account of the mud, while generally one side of the path is clean and solidenough to walk upon. V v
My invention further consists in providing a cheap and eflicient locking-arrangement, whereby cattle are prevented from opening'the gate, as is often the case with other gates, and which causes sometimes great damage in a garden, in a field, orin a farm-yard.
To enable others skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I'will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure '1 in the drawings is'a vertical plan.
Figure 2 is a horizontal plan.
Figure 3 is a section through a b, fig. 2. v
I plant firmly into the ground the post -A, and the double post B. Between the opening of the double post 13 swings up and down the folding gate, 0, it being hinged at D and E. The gate '0 is constructed of two oblique rails, ff, the top rail g, and the horizontal rails e, the number of which is not essential, four-of them being, however,-requisite for an ordinary farm-gate. At one end of the top rail 9 is adapted a counterweight, J, which overbalances the weight of the gate C.
The post A has, at its upper end, a grooved pulley, K, over which passes the rope or chain, L, having at its lower end the weightM, the other end being fastened to the gate 0 by mcans oi'the staple Z. To receive the weight M in its descent, a casing, N, is attached to the post A.
In order to retain the gate 0 down and lock'it, a spring, 0, is attached to the post A, which 'spring 0 is pressedinto a recess in the post A, when the gate C closes, and springs out again as soon as thegate C has touched the socket P.
In order to open the gate C, a rocking-shaft, Q, passes through the post A. This shaft Q has a pin, R,-
on it, which passesthrough a hole in the spring 0. When the shaft Q is moved by means of the handles S S,
the spring 0 is drawn into its recess, and the gate starts upwards, from the eii'ects of the weights J and M,
and this motion is continued until the gate 0 has'reached the position shown by the lines in red, fig. 1.
In order to close the gate, it is necessary to. pull the rope or chain L, until the gate C comes within reach of the hand, when it is drawn down upon the socket P, in which position it will lockitself, without any further I attention being paid to it. 7
'W-hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The oblique rails ff, the top rail g, the horizontal rails 1; i z, the rope or chain L, the staple Z, and the weight M, in combination with the post A, the pulley K, the casing N; the spring O, and the rock-shaftQ, substantially as andfor the purpose described in the foregoing specification.
JASPER S. JEWETT.
