Specification of Letters Patent.

To ctZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, AoLAND ORONHYA- TEKHA, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in Deseronto, in the county of Hastings, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in steam boilers, and the objects of my invention are, firstly, to design a boiler with a much greater heating area or surface than is possessed by a tubular or other makes of boilers now on the market; secondly, to con struct a boiler as set forth in the first object that will generate steam much quicker than is now possible with the usual steam boilers now in use; thirdly to construct my boiler so that same may be quickly and easily cleaned; fourthly to provide a reliable but yet comparatively cheap steam boiler possessing the advantages before enumerated, and fifthly to provide a boiler that can be augmented or decreased in size by adding or subtracting therefrom the required number of sections, thus making the boiler very elastic, and it broadly consists of a plurality of sections each composed of two metal plates spaced apart and suitably secured at their abutting portions so as to form a tight joint; each plate being provided with one or more holes; couplings to provide intercommunication between said sections through their associated holes in said plates, and means for coupling said sections in relative position.
Figure 1 is, in part, a central horizontal section through my preferred form of boiler. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line a.b, Fig. 1. and Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal cross-section through an alternative form of boiler section.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
The sections are composed of two metal plates A and B, which are suitably secured together at their abutting portions so as to form a tight joint. According to the construction shown of my preferred form of invention, these plates are bent over a metal frame C so that the end I) of the plate B will lap over said frame as shown, and so that the end'a of the plate A will lap over the end I), as shown. -The ends a and I) extend a sufficient distance down their respective sides of the metal frame C so that the rivets D may pass therethrough and through said metal frame, thus binding these parts securely together and forming an absolutely steam-tight and water-tight joint. This joint I also find to be very strong as it will be impossible for the pressure of steam designed to be held by the sections to rip these plates apart at these joints.
In order to provide intercommunication between the several. sections, same are provided with holes E and F with which cooperate the couplings G. In order that these couplings may be held in place, same are reduced in their external diameter so as to provide shoulders II which fit snugly against the plates. The ends I of these couplings extend preferably through said plates to their inner surfaces.
It will be noticed upon inspecting Fig. 1 that the couplings are in the fire-space J between the several sections. In order to maintain the plates A and B in the relative position, suitable means must be employed. According to the construction shown I )rovide blocks K T-shaped in cross-section t e inner portions of which fit in recesses L formed in the inner surfaces of said plates. From the foregoing'and Fig. 1, it will be understood that the blocks K are held between said plates thatis to say, in the Water-and-steam-chamber.
M are caps which are constructed to fit over the holes in the outer plates. In order to provide tight joints for these caps, the outer diameter of same near their ends are reduced so as to form shoulders N which fit tightly against their associated plates. This construction enables the ends 0 of said caps to extend through said plates preferably to their inner surfaces. Passing through the sections and through the couplings H and between the blocks K, and extending through the caps M, is a coupling-rod P the outer ends of which are threaded to receive locknuts Q. As I provide the construction just described preferably in the middle and at the top and bottom of each section it will be understood that I am enabled to provide intercommunication between the several sec tions, and at the same time stiffly couple said sections together. By means of the middle and lower holes formed in the plates, and the couplings H, it will be understood that the passage of water from section to section. is provided for. By means of any suitable feed-pipe R water is introduced into the boiler, and by following the arrows it will be seen how readily same passes from one section to another until all the sections are filled to the required height. By means of the upper holes in the plates, and the couplings and other parts associated therewith, it will be understood that there is intercommunication at the top portions of said sections so that the steam collected therein can be readily drawn off by tapping any one or more of said sections or couplings.
In Fig. 2 the letter S indicates any suitable steam pipe, and T indicates any suitable steam gage. U is any suitable water-gage suitably connected to the boiler after the manner shown, if desired. In order to still further couple and brace the sections to gether I pass through same preferably near each corner thereof rods V which have locknuts WV on their threaded outer ends. By means of the washers 3 through which said rods pass, and held in the fire-spaces J, it will be understood that the relative positions of the sections at these points will be maintained, and that the joints will be tight where said rods pass through said sections so as to prevent water and steam leaking therefrom.
Of course if it is necessary, the oints throughout my boiler will be made steam-tight and water-tight after any of the well-known constructions now employed in this art.
By constructing the sections with a V- shaped or approximately a Vshaped bottom 4 and making the holes in the plates A and B near their bottoms somewhat larger than the other holes made therein, it will be understood that in case any sediment collects in the bottom of said sections, same can be readily removed by removing the caps M and the rod P passing therethrough and blowing same out of said sections through the passage-way formed by the couplings H.
Of course my boiler must be inclosed, and for the purpose of illustration I have shown same covered by any suitable casing 5 which is preferably provided with a lining of asbestos 6. The fire is of course built on any suitable grate 7 in the fire-box 8 and the flames play up between said sections. 9 is any suitable smoke-stack. It will be noticed from the drawings that these sections are designed to be used so that the plates will occupy a vertical position thus enabling the heat to come in contact with the outer surfaces ofboth plates.
The upper portion of each section is preferably constructed so as to converge more or less, thus facilitating the passage of steam from the boiler as it is well known steam rises to the highest point.
In the alternative form of construction of the sections shown in Fig. 1, I dispense with the metal frame C by bending the ends I) of the plate B back on themselves so that when the plates A and B are riveted together by the rivets D passing through the folded end 6 and through the end a of said plate A folded over the folded end I), it will be understood that the requisite distance between the said plates will be provided, thus providing the necessary space for the accommodation of water between said plates.
Changes in the construction of my boiler may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and it is to be understood that my claims are broader than the actual construction shown and described.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A steam boiler comprising a plurality of metal frames; a first plate placed on one side thereof and having its ends lap ed or folded over said metal frame; a secon metal plate placed on the other side of said metal frame and having its ends lapped or folded over the lapped ends of said first metal plate, each of said plates being provided with one or more holes in alinement with the holes in the opposite plate; means for securing the lapped or folded ends of said metal plates to said metal frame so as to form a tight joint; couplings for providing intercommunication between said sections through said associated holes in said plates, and means for coupling said sections in relative position.
2. A steam boiler comprising a plurality of metal frames, provided with V-shaped bottoms; a metal plate secured to each side of said frame so as to form a tight joint, each plate being provided with one or more holes in alinement with the holes in the opposite plate, the lower sets of holes being near the apeX of said V-shaped bottom; couplings for providing intercommunication between said sections through their associated holes in said plates, and means for coupling said sections in relative position.
3. A steam boiler comprising a plurality of metal frames, provided with V-shaped bottoms; a first metal plate having its ends bent around said metal frame; a second metal plate having its ends bent around the bent end of said first metal plate; rivets for securing said ends to said metal frame so as to form a tight joint; the said lates being provided with one or more ho es in alinement with the holes in the opposite plate; couplings for providing intercommunication between said sections through their associated holes in said plates, and means for coupling said sections in relative position.
4. A steam boiler comprising a plurality of metal frames provided with V-shaped bottoms; a first metal plate having its ends bent around said metal frame; a second metal plate having its ends bent around the bent end of said first metal plate; rivets for securing said ends to said metal frame so as to form a tight joint; the said plates being provided with one or more holes in alinement with the holes in the opposite plate;
couplings for providing intercommunication between said sections through their associated holes in said plates removable couplingrods passing through said couplings and said plates; means for keeping said coupling-rods in place, and means for coupling said sections together so as to permit of the removal of said coupling-rods and yet prevent the displacement of said sections.
5. A boiler section comprising a metal frame; a first plate placed on one side there of, and having its ends lapped or folded over said metal frame; a second metal plate placed on the other side of said metal frame and having its ends la ped or folded over the lapped ends of said first metal plate, each of said plates being provided with one or more holes in alinement with'the holes in the opposite plate, and rivets for securing the lapped or folded ends of said metal plates to said metal frame so as to form a tight joint.
