Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. LIGHT, a citizen of' the United States,`residing at No. `22 North Tenth street, Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Steam-Generators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a `full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same'.
My invention relates to steam-generators, has especial reference to that class known as sectionah in which the headers are connected by water and re tubes, has for its object economy in construction and a high degree of efficiency as a steam-generator; and it consists in certain improvements in construction, which will be fully disclosed in the following specilication and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure l represents a front elevation, partly in section; Fig. 2, a side elevation, partly in section; Fig. 3, a vertical section and a side View of one of the headers on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 4, a side elevation of one of the headers and tubes connected therewith, parts thereof being shown in section.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates the headers, serpentine in form, to be closely nested, and in each alternate neck at is formed a transverse partition b to divide the header into separate chambers c andthe partitions serving to stiften or brace the headers', so that the fire-tubes need not be permanently or rigidly secured thereto by swaging, caulking, or upsetting, asis the usual practice. On the outer side of each header are openings d, internally screw-threaded to receive externally-screwthreaded packing-boxes e, having a packingchamber fte receive asbestos or other suitable packing,'(not shown, and a gland g, connected thereto' by a screw-threaded connection, and oppositeeach opening cl is'an opening h, slightly less-in diameter than the opening CZ, to admit of removing the tube secured in the opening h through the opening dshould said tube require renewing, and around each opening h is a projecting wall t', forming a chamber 7c to receive a suitable packing, (not shown,) and on each end of the header is an opening Z, also surrounded by a wall m, forming a packing-chamber n.
The water-tubes B are connected to the headers through the medium of the openings h, and the tire-tubes C pass concentrically through the tubes B and are secured to the headers by the glands g, so that they are free to expand and contract and can be readily replaced when necessary without unnecessary labor or Waste of time, and the partitions b stien the headers, so that there is no vibration therein produced by the expansion and contraction of the tubes.
The headers at the front or rear en d of the boiler are connected at their lower ends by nipples or in any preferred manner to a waterdistributing pipelD and the upper ends are connected by nipples p or in any preferred manner to a steam-distributing pipe E, and the steam-distributing pipe is connected to a plurality of small steam-drums F by pipes q, so that a high degree of pressure, of the steam may be carried in the drums at the minimum of danger of explosion, and the circulation of the water in the boiler is rendered direct by the tubes B and O connecting the chambers c of the front and rear headers, so that the water flows from one chamber to another throughout the headers.
The circulating-pipes D and E are connected by pipe G, Ts H and I, and an expansionjoint K, and water is supplied through pipes r, extending down through Ts H, pipes G, and Ts I, where it is heated and isdischarged into chambers s, rises through lter-chamber t, and is distributed through pipe D into the several headers A and passes on in circulation throughthe Water-tubes B into the several chambers c in the headers and is converted into steam, which is first collected in pipe E, from which it rises into the drums F and is conducted therefrom by pipe tt', lthence through valve o and suitableconduits or pipes to the place of consumption. The drums F are supported at their front end by the pipe D and at their rear end by a truss or beam L, supported on columns M and yokes or stirrups w, connected to the beam L.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- IOO 1. A header having screw-threaded openings on one sidethereof,screw-threaded packj ustable packingglands connected to said boxes, and openings at each end of the header.
3. A serpentine headerhaving openings arranged in pairs, a transverse partition between each pair of openings and forming sepf arate chambers, detachable packing-boxes in'V each chamber on one side of the header, and openings on the opposite side of the headerl of less diameter than the packing-boxes, and
openings at each end of `the header.
4. A steam-generator having serpentine headers at each end provided with openings arranged in pairs, a transverse partition between each pair of openings and forming sepl arate chambers in the headers, detachable packing-boxes in each chamber, and openings opposite thereto, fire-tubes connected to the headers by said packing# boxes and their glands and eiztending through the headers, 'and water-tubes connected to said opposite openings in the headers and surrounding the fire-tubes.
5. A steamgenerator having serpentine headers at each end provided with openings arranged in pairs, a transverse partition between each 'pai-r of openings and forming sep- 'arate Vchambers in the headers, detachable packing-boxes in each chamber, and openings opposite thereto, water and steam distributing pipes to which the headers are lconnected, iretubes secured in said packing-boxes vto `expand therein -and extending through the headers, and Watertubes surrounding the fire-tubes andconnected to the headers.
