JAMES M. BERRY, ()F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
CURTAlN-ROLLER CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907,
Application filed February 23, 1966 Serial No. 302,603
To aid whom it may wn.-
Be it known that i, JAMES BERRY, :1 Citizen of the United States of America, rosiding at Detroit, in the county of \Veync and State of Michigan, have invented eertuin new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Roller Caps, of which the following is n. pecification, reference being haul therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates generally to spring curtain rollers. and particularly to a cap, the pswls of which are adapted to be held at will in inoperative position.
It is frequently desirable to use a curtain roller at tlu sides or lower end of a. window, for the purpose of being drswn transversely of upwardly by means or a (ford passing over suitable sheaves or pulleys. In these instancos, in order that the curtain may he readilv raised and lowered, it is necessary that the pewis be inoperative.
The present invention is designed to pen unit of the retention of the pawls in inoperrb tive po iti n and also to allow the use of the roller in the ordinary 111511111101, end it consistg in the novel construction of the cap, and in the peculiar arrangement and combine.- tion of the parts, as will be more full hereinafter set forth.
n the drawings illustrating the lnvention, Figure l is a view in perspective of s curtsin roller and cap of ordinary construct on, the p being partly in section; Pig. 2 s a detached pars eetive V ew of the eyllndrical esp body F g. 3 is s- VlGW sho wing e inodrfied form of cap Fig. 4 1s a further nuidincatwn; and Fig. 5 is a detached PGISPBCUVQ' view of the overlying plate forming a part of the cap shown in Fig 4.
In the drawings thus described, A represents the usual curtain roller, recessed in the ordinary manner at its upper end; C is e eylindrioa] b d ortion of the cap, D is the.
usual end plate, driven Within the end of the roller bv suitable lugs, as a.
E r res -guts the pawls, pivoted upon the plat I? d F a spring ratchet which the pawls engage. In this instance the retrunmg means for the pswls cons1sts of lugs or fingers H, for d f integral portlons of the eylmdricnl (up body, (7: They are normally in the position shown in Fig. 2, extending in the plane of the inturncd marginal [hinge I. W hen it is desired to render the pswl inop erstive, these lingers are depressed, in the manner indioeted st 5 in Fig. 1, to engage the pawl and hold it out of engagement with the ratchet F. When it is desired to use the roller again in the ordinary manner. the iin gers or lugs are merely bent outwsrdly into their normal position, and the pswls are again free to operate in the ordinhry manner.
In Fig. 3 a modified Form of cap is shown its end plate J in this instance being formed preferably integral with the cylindrical body section K. Retaining lugs or ears .IJ are formed from integral portions of the piste J the latter being properly out or slitted so as to permit of the projecting portions being extended upwardly when desired to engage the pewls, as illustrated.
In Fig. 4 a further modification is shown, wherein the retaining ears M are upon an enxiiiary piste 0, adapted to be mounted upon any ordinary end plate of a roller and held thereon by means of the pawl pivots P. The ears M, as shown in Fig. 5, are struck from the ajuxiliary plate, and adapted to be bent downwardly into engagement with the pawls when the letter are to be held from engagement with the ratchet.
It will be observed that the pawl-retaining devices are in each instance adjustable to be brought into or out of operative relation with the pewls, as may be desired, thus adapting the ordinary curtain roller, at little if any additional expense, for either ordinary use or to be used at the bottom of the Window or at the side, as preferred.
What I claim is,
1. In a. curtain roller cap, the combination with the end plate, pawls pivoted thereon. an auxiliary plate rigidly secured to said end plate, and fingers or lugs formed of integral portions of said latter plate, adapted to be extended into engagement with the pevvls.
2. A curtain roller cap, comprising an end plate, pewls pivoted thereon, and an auxilmry piste rigidly secured to said end plate end. slit to form pliable tongues normally in the plane of said auxiliary plate and urrenged to be bent into engagement with said pmvls, for the purpose deserilwd.
2: ln :1 curtain roller cap, the combination with the (nip proper and. the pivoted pawls therefor, of pliable tongues having their bases rigidly (-onnerted to the (warp proper. and their ends arranged to be bent into operative relation to the pztwls, for the purpose described.
ln testinunry whereol' l :Llli); my signature in presenre of two witi'lesses.
