ATTAGHM ENT FOR DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,491, dated October l0, 1899). Application filed March 20, 1899. Serial No. 709,742. (No model.)
To all whom it may conccrm' Be it known that I, GEORGE J. WINTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device compris: ing an attachment or attachments adapted to be secured to the lower portion of an ordinary door and a roller supported in slideways in said attachment or attachments and adapted to rest upon the floor to prevent the entrance of drafts or currents'of air.
For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.
The invention is susceptible to various changes in the form, proportion, and minor.
details of construction without departing from the principle onsacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in
which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a doorhaving my improved device attached thereto.
. Fig. 2 is an enlarged edge View of a portion of a door havingmyinvention fastened thereto. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section through the roller. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detached view of one of the metallic supporting devices. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detached side elevation of one of the spring-supporting rods, also-illustrating a longitudinal section;
through one of the shafts to show the manner of attaching the rods to the shaft. 6 is an enlarged side elevation of one of the spring-supporting rods and the shaft towhich it is attached.
In referring to the drawings in detail like numerals designate like parts.
My improveddevice is illustrated in Fig. 1 as attached to an ordinar r door 1 and com prises the metallic supporting-plate 2 and the roller 3. Each of the metallic plates 2 is preferably formed of sheet metal stamped into Fig;
is formed integral with the plate and extends I and rest against the door side, screws6 being I passed through said portions to fasten the platesthereto. The roller 3 is formed of any well-knownmaterial or metal and is provided with a peripheral covering of soft or fibrous material Ssuch as carpet, rubber, or cloth. A circular hole 9 extends centrally longitudinally into each end of the roller to form a bearing, and a short horizontal shaft 10 is loosely journaled in each of said holes. An enlargement 11 is formed at the outer end of each of these shafts and is provided with a vertical screw-threaded opening, in which the screw-threaded lower end 12 of one of' the spring-supporting rods 13 is adapted to screw. (See Fig. A slit or slot 14 is cut in the top of each rod to receive a screw-driver or similar instrument. A spiral spring 15 is supported upon each of these rods 13. p The attachment is assembled and fastened. to a door as follows; A spiral spring 15 is placed upon oneof the spring-supporting rods and the upper end of the rod inserted in an opening through one of the 'ears 5. The
"inner end of one of the shafts 11 is passed through the slot in one of the plates 2, and the lower screw-threaded rod is screwed into the screw-threaded opening in the enlarged outer end of the shaft. The other plate and its attachments are assembled in like manher, and one of the plates is attached to the lower surface of the door near one side edge by the screws. The shafts are in the openings in the ends of the roller and the opposite plate is secured in place by screws.
A stop device for limiting the upward movement of the roller is fastened to the door above the roller. This device is preferably fastened as shown in the drawings, in which a vertical plate 16 is secured to the door by the screws 17 and has a curved arm 18, which is adapted to extend "over the roller. This device can be easily and quickly attached to any door without altering or appreciably marring the same and serves to prevent the entrance of drafts.
The roller is maintained against the floor in the plate can rise and roll over any small object or obstruction in its path. The covering of fibrous or soft material upon the roller prevents any wearing of the carpet incident to the opening and closing of the door and also acts to clean the portion of the carpet over which it passes.
I claim as my invention 1. An attachment for doors, comprising two plates having their upper portions bent at an angle and adapted to be secured to the lower portion of a door, and each having a vertical slot in their lower portion and a bent part vertically above said slot forming a horizontal ear, a roller interposed between said plates and having end openings, shafts journaled in said openings and passing through and ex tending beyond the vertical slots and having vertical extensions on the exterior of the slots passing th rough openings in the ears and spiral springs loosely mounted on said vertical extensions with their upper ends resting against the ears and their lower ends against the shafts, as set forth.
2. An attachment fordoors, comprising two plates adapted to be secured to the lower portion of a door, and each having a vertical slot and an integral outwardly-extending ear, a roller interposed bet ween said plates and having shafts passing through the slots and provided with vertical openings, vertical extensions forming spring-supporting rods having their upper ends supported in the ears and their lower ends detachably secured in the shaft-openings, springs supported upon said rods, and a curved arm attached to the door and extending over-the roller to limit its upward movement, as set forth.
3. An attachment for doors, comprising two plates each having a portion bent at substantiallya right angle and adapted to be secured to the lower portion of a door, and a main portion provided with an integrally-formed horizontal ear and a vertical slot directly be low said car, a roller interposed between said plates and having shafts projecting through said slots, said shafts having vertical openings in their outer extremes exterior to the slot-s, vertical rods having their upper ends supported in the ears and their lower ends supported in the shaftopenings, springs mounted upon said rods for maintaining said roller in its lower position with a spring force, and a stop device for limiting the upward movement, as set forth.
at. An attachment for doors, comprising two plates adapted to be secured to the lowerportion of a door, and each having a vertical slot and a horizontal ear, a roller interposed between said plates and having end openings, shaftsjournaled in said openings and having enlarged outer ends provided with screwthreaded openings, spring-supporting rods having their screw-threaded lower ends screw iug into the openings in the enlarged ends of the shafts and their upper ends passing through openings in the ears and springs supported on said rods, as set forth.
5. An attachment for doors, comprising two plates adapted to be secured to the lower portion of a door, and each having a vertical slot and a horizontal ear, a roller interposed between said plates and having end openings, shafts journaled in said openings and having enlarged outer ends provided with screwthreaded openings, spring-supporting rods having their screw-threaded lower ends screwing into the openings of the enlarged ends of the shafts and their upper ends passing through the ears, springs supported upon said rods, and a curved arm attached to the door and extending over the roller to limit its upward movement, as set forth.
