APPLICATION IILEDHAR. 25, 190% INV ENTOR.,
IWIEIT'N sagas JAMES RABEY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR FACILITATING THE REMOVAL OF VALVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7. 07;
Application filed March 25,1907. Serial No. 364,476.
To all 10/1071 it ntaj concern:
Be it known that I, (Ii-urns RABEY, a citizen of the Ilnited States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Facilirating the Removal of Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for facilitating the removal of the valves from the valve boxes of explosive engines and has for its obicct to make a simple device which may be readily carried in the tool kit of an automobilist or workman and which is readily adjustable to the varying sizes and types of engines.
In order to remove the valve in case of regrinding or repair it is necessary to remove the key against the action of the spring holding the valve to its seat and as the key is usually notched out on its under side to engage the stem on both sides and prevents its falling out it becomes quite ditlicult to do so unless one is skilled in the work and it is the object of my invention to provide a simple tool for this purpose.
To this end the invention consists in the combination of a lever, a member pivotally attached thereto and means for locking the parts in posit-ion all as more fully herein after described nd shown in the accompanying drawing, in which my device is shown in perspective viewmas in actual use, the valve seat and chamber of the engine being broken away to better show the parts.
A indicates the wall of 't'he valve chamber, B the valve therein, C the stern projecting through an aperture in the wall, D a coiled spring sleeved on the stem to normally hold the 'valve to its seat, E a cupped washer ent gaging the lower end of the spring and F a key passing through an aperture in the stem to hold the washer in place against the action o'tthe spring all of well known construction.
The device consists of a hand lever G bent at substantially right angles at its inner end to form a point H to engage the upper side ot the v'alve and a hook shaped member I piv- 'otally secured to the lever intermediate its ends and 'birurcated at its lower end J to engage the valve stem. Said hook shaped member being slotted at K to permit the lever G to pass therethrough and L 1s a pm or screw pivot-ally connecting the lever and member I adjustably in relation to each other by reason of the holes M in both parts soas to readily adapt the device to the varying styles and sizes of engines. N are ratchet teeth formed in the rear face of the member I near its upper end and Q is a pawl pivotally attached to the lever and engaging said teeth to lock the lever in any position.
For removing the valve the usual screw bushing directly over the valve is removed from the wall of the valve chaml'rer and the hooked end H of the lever G engaged with the valve 0 and the bifurcated lower end of the member I engaged with the valve stem beneath the washer E the bifurcation being placed in alinement with the key which holds the disk so as to straddle the same. The free end of the lever G is then raised to compress the spring D the pawl 0 locking the lever in its raised position while the key I is being taken out after which the tool is removed and the valve iifted out without difficulty.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1 In a device of the character described, the combination of amember bent at right angles near its lower end and bifurcated at its lower end, a lever pivoted on said member near its upper end and bentat right angles, a pawl pivoted on said lever and ratchet teeth on said member cooperating with said pawl.
' 2; Ina device of the character described, the combination of a hook shaped member bifurcated at its lower end and formed with ratchet teeth near its upper end, a bent lever pivoted on said member and a pawl pivoted on said lever cooperating with said teeth,
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a member formed with a right angle bend and bifurcated at its lower end, said member having a slot and ratchet teeth near its upper end, a bent lever extending through said slot, a pawl pivoted on said lever, and adapted to co-operate with said teeth and means for pivotally and adjustably connecting said member and lever.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
