Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY Z. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Removers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to devices intended for use in removing valves from motors, and has for its primary object the provision of means for relieving the pressure of the valve-spring pending its removal from the valve-stem; a further object is to make a structure which shall be accessible to the valve parts when pipes or other impediments are adjacent such parts; also to render the parts adjustable; and finally, to provide a device which is inexpensive, simple, and strong.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2, a section of the same on line x a: of Fig. 1, showing a part of the chain in elevation. Fig. 3, a bottom view of the same. Figs. 4 and 5, side and edge elevations respectively of a section of the chain. Fig. 6, a section of the lever bar on line y y of Fig. 1, and Fig. 7, a side elevation of my device showing the same in operative position upon a valve.

The preferred embodiment of my invention comprises a flat bar, 1, with a reduced end portion, 2, which serves as a handle. In place of the reduced portion any convenient grasping means may be applied, or such reduction may be omitted if the body The end of the bar opposite the handle is bifurcated forming a central longitudinal slot, 3; and the end of the bifurcated portion is upturned at substantially right angles to the plane of the bar, forming two tapering V shaped projections, 4, 4.
Through the body of the bar are a plurality of oblong openings, 5, in longitudinal alinement with each other. In detail each opening comprises an oblong rectangular portion, 6, terminating in a curved portion, 7, of greater diameter than the breadth of the rectangular portion. The lower face of the bar has circular inwardly beveled countersunk portions or seats, 8, adjacent and merging into the rectangular portions, 6. While the described openings are of preferred form, their outline may be varied, but it is essential that, when the form of chain used is that hereinafter described, one part of the opening be more restricted in area than the other portion. An operative but correspondingly less useful structure may comprise only one opening.

In conjunction with the described bar is used a curved bearing member or hook, 9, preferably terminating in a point, 10, to which is attached a chain, 11, whose links, 12, are of irregular contour. The end of the chain may be free, as shown in Fig. l, or attached to hook 13, or otherwise removably fixed to some portion of the bar body, as shown in Fig. 7.
The chain shown comprises links which consist of a flat body, 14, provided with an opening, 15, .therethrough. The upper part of the link is narrower and thicker than the body, forming a head, 16, with an' opening or passage, 17, transversely disposed with relation to the opening, 15, and receiving the end of the adjacent link. The portions, 6, of the openings are sufl iciently broad to permit the entrance of the flat portions, 14, of the links, but too narrow to allow passage of the heads, 16; although the heads can readily traverse When the chain links are in engaged position the head, 16, of the link rests against the seat or shoulder, 8, providing the chain is under tension, and forms, as will be later shown, a fulcrum point for the lever bar, 1. l
The operation of my device is shown in conjunction with a gasolene motor cylinder, 19, equipped with the valve, 20, stem 21, valve spring, 22, washer, 23, and supporting pin, 24; all of usual form. My remover is operated as follows: The point, 10, of the member, 9, rests upon the center of the valve, 21, in whose upper surface usually exists a small cavity. The bar, 1, is adjusted at the desired height upon the chain by pushing a link into the restricted portion of the opening, 5. The ends of the projections, 4, are placed against the lower face of the washer, 23, in which position the valve stem, 21, is in alinement with the slot, 3. The handle, 2, of the bar, 1, is manually depressed whereby the valve-spring, 22, is compressed, and the pressure thereby removed from the retaining pin, 24, whereupon the operator is enabled to withdraw the latter, and release the valve parts.
By the use of a chain or other flexible element as a connecting element of the device, the pipes or other obstructions on or adjacent the valve cylinder, do not prevent the necessary leverage of the bar. The plurality of openings, 5, afford any desired change of fulcrum point. And the seats, 8, assist in retaining the chain in engaged position when tension upon the chain is lessened.
What I claim is,
1. in a valve remover, the combination with a lever bar provided with an oblong opening of greater width at one end than at the other, of a bearing member, and a chain attached to the bearing member of suflileient dimensions to slide through the broader end of the opening, but not slidable in the narrow portion of the opening.
In a valve remover the combination with a lever bar provided with an oblong; opening of greater width at one end than at the other, of a bearing member, and a chain attached to the bearing member slidable through a portion of said opening, and comprising links having thin body portions and thick head portions.

In a valve remover the combination with a lever bar provided with an irr gular opening of greater width at one end than at the other and having a countersunk portion upon the under face of the bar merging into a portion of the opening, of a bearing member and a chain upon the bearing member adapted to traverse a portion of said opening, the chain comprising links provided with thick head portions adapted to rest in the countersunk portion of the bar when tension is applied to the chain.

In a valve remover the combination with a lever bar provided with an opening of irregular dimensions, of a bearing member. and a chain attached to the bearing member slidable through a portion of said opening but nonslidable through another portion of said opening 5. In a valve remover the combination with a lever-bar provided with an opening of irregular dimensions, of a bearing member, and a flexible member attached to the bearing member slidable through a portion of said opening, but non-slidable through another portion of said opening.
