Be it known that we, MosEs MooDY DOWNER and GEORGE E. I'TAWES, citizens of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairiield, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Abdominal Corset, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the class of abdominal corsets in which the abdomen is reduced and supported by tabs whose rear ends are attached to the body of the corset approximately mid-way between the front and sides and whose front ends are adjustably secured to each other at the front, and the invention consists in providing these tabs with anchor plates of metal which are stitched between the plies of the tabs, the plate in one tab serving as a means for anchoring an attaching stud and the plate in the other tab serving as a means for anchoring a plurality of eyelets through either of which the stud may be passed, and said plates serving additionally to insure that the pull upon the tabs shall be direct and evenly distributed and to hold the tabs against wrinkling, the stud and the eyelets being so shaped that when the stud is engaged with an eyelet and the tabs are bowed outward by distention of the abdomen the stud will be locked in the eyelet so that the tabs will not become disconnected in use and can only be disconnected by llattening the abdomen and pressing the ends of the tabs inward.

With these and other objects in view we have devised the novel structure of which the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings is a specification, reference characters being used to indicate the several parts:

Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating so much of the front of a corset as is necessary to illustrate the application of our invention thereto; Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of the tabs, illustrating the engaged position of the stud with an eyelet; Fig. 3 a similar view illustrating the engaging and disengaging position of the stud and an eyelet: Fig, 4 a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating an application of the invention in which an ordinary commercial hose supporter is attached to the lower edge of the tab and to the body of the corset, and also showing a modified engaging stud which is made in the form of a backwardly-turned hook Fig. 5 a vlew corresponding wlth Flg. 2 and illustrating the modified engaging stud in the engaged position; Fig. 6 a view corresponding with Fig. 3, illustrating the modified engaging stud in the engaging and disengaging position; and Fig. 7 is a plan view of an anchor plate detached.

10 denotes the body of a corset which may be of any ordinary or preferred construction, the structure of the corset itself being wholly immaterial so far as the present invention is concerned. The parts are shown as secured together at the front by the usual studs and eyes, indicated respectively by 11 and 12.

13 denotes the tabs which are made of two plies of fabric and the rear ends of which are secured to the body of the corset as at 1 1. The special shape of these tabs is immaterial and may be varied to suit the taste of the manufacturer or the requirements of the trade.

The essential feature of novelty of the invention consists in anchor plates 17 which are secured between the plies of the tabs by stitching as at 18. The shape of the anchor plates is not an essential feature of the invention although we preferably employ anchor plates of substantially the form illustrated in the drawings, said plates consisting ofa transverse portion 19 and a longitudinal portion 20, said longitudinal portion having a lateral enlargement, as at 21, between the cross piece and the tip and tapering from the enlargement to the tip, which is indicated by 22. o wish it distinctly understood however that this special form of anchor plates is not essential, it being simply required that the anchor plates be so shaped that they may be firmly secured in place by a line of stitching about them. One of the tabs is provided near its free end with an engaging stud 23, the shank of which is firmly riveted in the anchor plate. The other tab is provided near its free end with a plurality 24 which are seated in the anchor plate and the ends of which are closed over the plies of the tab. The openings in the eyelets permit the engaging stud to pass through when the tabs are pressed together with the anchor plates substantially parallel with each other.

of eyelets If it is desired to reduce the abdomen, the abdomen must be drawn in and held while the engaging stud is passed through an eyelet, the position of the tabs in engaging and disengaging the stud and an eyelet being clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 6. The instant the compression of the abdomen is relieved, it will cause the tabs to bow outward and the under side of the head of the stud will ride over the top of the eyelet, partly inclosing it, thereby locking the tabs together, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. In this position theycannot be disconnected without drawing the abdomen inward and pressing the tabs inward until the stud will disengage from-theeyelet, as clearly indicated in Figs. 3 and 6.

In the form illustrated in Fig. 4, we have shown ordinary commercial hose supporters 15 attached to the lower edges of the tabs and also to the body of the corset beyond the rear ends of the tabs. In this form, see also Figs. 5 and 6, we have shown the engaging stud 23 as made in the form of a backwardly turned hook, the under side of which is a straight line, as at 25, and lies parallel with the anchor plate.

Having thus described our invention we claim:

1. In a corset, the combination with a body and tabs secured thereto, of anchor plates secured in the tabs, a stud secured in one of the anchor plates and'an eyelet in the other tab which'is seated in the anchor plate and will receive the stud when the tabs lie parallel, the stud making a locking engagement with the top of the eyelet when the tabs are bowed outward.

2. In acorset, the combination with abody and tabs whose rear ends are secured thereto between the front and the sides, of anchor plates secured in the tabs, a stud secured in one of the anchor plates, and a plurality of eyelets in the other tab which are seated in the anchor plate and either of which will receive the stud when the tabs lie parallel, the

stud engaging the top of the eyelet and looking the tabs together when the tabs are bowed outward.

3. In a corset, the combination with a body and tabs secured thereto, of anchor plates secured in the tabs, a stud havinga head in the form of a backwardly turned hook secured in one of the anchor plates, the under side of said hook being straight and parallel with the anchor plate, and a plurality of eyelets in the other tab which are seated in the anchor plate and either of which will receive the hook when thetabs lie parallel, the straight underside of said hook passing over and partly inclosing the top of the eyelet when the tabs are bowed outward, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.

4. In a corset, the combination with a body and tabs secured thereto, of anchor plates se cured in the tabs, each comprising a transverse portion, a longitudinal portion, and a lateral enlargement, a stud secured in one of the anchor plates and a plurality of eyelets in the other tab which are seated in the anchor plate and either of which will receive the stud when the tabs lie parallel.

5. In a corset, the combination with a body, tabs secured thereto and hose supporters secured to the lower edges of the tabs and to the body of the corset beyond the rear ends of the tabs, of anchor plates secured in the tabs, one of said tabs being provided with an en-v gaging stud seated in the anchor .plate and the other tab with a plurality of eyelets seat-' ed inthe anchor plate, whereby the ends of the tabs may be adjustably connected together.
