JOHN GOODNOUGH, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
COMBINED CUFF-HOLDER AND GARMENT-SUPPORTER- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed July 3,1906. Serial No. 324- 568.
To [LZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN Goo'nNoUon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Cuff Holder and Garment Supporter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garment and fabric fasteners and is applicable as ahold or for removablysecuring a cuff to the shirt sleeve in an adjustable mann er; it is also well adapted as a fastener for attaching hose to hose supporters, and for use in holding up dress skirts and shirt sleeves.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple inexpensive and durable device which will have no sharp points or projecting parts to catch on other parts of the wearers cloth ing or other objects.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation showing my improved fastener in use as a cuff holder. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder detached from the sleeve and cuff. Fig. 3 is an end view of the fastener. Fig. 4 represents a pair of fasteners used together as a shirt sleeve holder. Fig. 5 shows the invention in use as a fastener for a ladies hose supporter and Fig. 6 shows the same applied to a hose supporter for men.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
The fastener is formed from a single piece of spring wire bent upon itself to form an open eye or loop 8, which in a cuff holder is to receive and hold the shirt button which unites the inner edges of the cuff. Extending from the loop 8 is the rm 9 which is substantially straight when the fastener is in its open osition shown in Fig. 2. The outer end 0' the arm 9 is bent laterally of the arm and thence around in a spiral curve 10 to form two coils of a spring construction at the end of the arm 9. These two coils form the two members 11 and 12 of a laterally expanding elastic clamp, which members are drawn normally toward each other by the resiliency of the spring wire out of which the fastener is made. 13 is the opposite end or arm of wire from the loop 8 and is bent in wardly to form the elbow 14K, and at a suitable distance below the elbow 14 the wire is bent in an outward direction and the end which is continued so as to extend a further distance from the loop 8 than the clamp on arm 9 terminates with the small circular bend 15. The bond 15 is to provide a blunt terminal for the end of its arm to prevent injury to the wearer and to keep the arm from catching on adjacent objects.
The operation of my device is as follows; the eye 8 is made to receive the inner cuff button and the cuff with the fastener attached to it is pushed up on the shirt sleeve to the desired position and then a fold of the sleeve or a flap of the sleeve slit is placed between the coils or jaws 11 and 12 of the clamp, and then the arm or lever 13 is inserted between the jaws 11 and 12 and is pressed firmly between said jaws by a pressure against the end 15. The resiliency of the arm 13 tends to f orcc it between the jaws of the clamp, and the elasticity of the jaws 11 and 12 and spring of the arm securely hold the fastener to the garment. In order to re lease the fastener from the sleeve, a pressure will be delivered by the thumb or finger against the elbow 14 which presses the arm 13 out of the clamp. This elbow 14 and the clamp formed out of two coils of a spring, are the most essential features of my invention.
The device, as above adapted for holding up the sleeves of a shirt or other garment by using a pair of the fasteners put together in the manner shown in Fig. l, which allows for the free movement of the two sections with relation to each other and presents a clamping device at each end of the compound article for ready attachment to the parts of the garment with which it is used.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5, a rectangular loop is provided in place of the circular one, to receive one of the tapes of a hose supporter. The clamp at the opposite end from the rectangular loop is the same in construction as heretofore described and pro vides the means for the ready attachment of the hose supporter to the hose in the manner as clearly shown. Fig. 6 shows this modified fastener in use on a supporter for mens hose.
Hz ving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A fastener for garments made out of a single piece of spring wire bent and curved to form an open eye or loop from which two arms extend, one of said arms having its outer end bent into two coils of a spring to described, is well form the two jaws of a laterally expanding elastic clamp and the other arm being adapted to be inserted between the jaws of said clamp to retain a garment placed therein, said arm having an outward elbow extension between the open eye and said clamp.
2. A fastener for garments made out of a single piece of wire bent to form an open eye or loop from which the two ends of the Wire extend to form diverging arms, one of said arms terminating in two coils of a spring which form the two jaws of a laterally expanding elastic clamp, the other of said arms having an inward bend at a distance from the said eye or loop less than the distance of the I 5 In witness whereof, I, have hereunto set 20 -my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana,
