Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed May 8,1906. fl- O- 315,300.
To all wiumt it 'nm- 0011110771,.-
1 13 and is provided with an annular flange 1 L MICKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winston Salem, in the county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina, have mvented a new and useful Stovepipe-Joint, of
which the following is a specification.
T his invent on relates to pipe oints more particularly to the ]0l11i'S between stove pipes and the thimbles in chimneys, and has for its Object to simplify and improve the construction and increase the elliciency of devices of this character.
l/Vith these and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention. consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which corresponding parts aredenoted by like designating characters is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation it being understood that various changes in form; proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a chimney, the stove pipe thimble, and a portion of a stove pipe coupled to the thimble by the improved devices. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the thimble detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the stove pipc detached. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on a rcduced scale, illustrating the manner of applying the improved device to the thimble cap.
The improved device may be readily adapted to the joints of pipes of various kinds, but is more particularly applicable to the joints between stove pipes, and the joints between stove pipes and the thimbles of the chimney, and for the purposes of illustrationis-shown thus applied, the chimney being represented at 10, the thimble, which is the receiving tubular member, at 11, and
the pipe, which is the entering tubular memher, at 12.
The thimble or receiving member is of the usual form except that it projects for a short distance from the plaster line, represented at spaced a short distance from the outer face of the. plaster. The flange 14: is formed with one or more gaps or spar es 15 and the thimhle is provided with an inwardly extending pin 16 intermediate the ends.
The stove pipe or entering member 12, is provided. with hooks 17 rorresponding to the gaps 15 in the flange 14L and adapted. to pass through the same when the pipe is inserted into the thimble, and when the pipe is thus inserted and rotated, the hooks 17 will pass over the solid portions of the flange and firmly lock the pipe to the thimble. EX- tending from the end of the pipe 12 is a hook 18 adapted to engage the pin 16 when the hooks 17 have passed over the flange, to pre vent the pipe being turnedtoo far, and also to serve as an additional holding means, to prevent the withdrawal of the pipe.
The device is readily applicable without structural changes or material modifications, to the joints between stove pipe sections, and may also be applied to the caps em ployed for closing the thimbles when the pipes are removed, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
The device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and applied to pipes of all sizes.
The pipe is firmly locked in position, and etl'cctually prevented. from accidental dis placement and also from being thrust too far into the thimble.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, is
In a device of the class described, a tubular receiving member having a stop pin and a flange provided with one or more openings, and a tubular entering member having radial hooks and a projecting hook, the parts being so arranged that when said. entering member is inserted into the receiving member and rotated, the radial hooks will pass through the flange openings and engage the flange and the projecting hook will engage the stop pin.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afliXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses:
SAMUEL TIMOTHY MICKEY.
