STOVEPIPE AND ATHIMBLE FASTENER.
N0.5o4,369. ,Patent-edseptg, 1893.k
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. SCOTT AND GEORGE W. WISNER, OF MANHATTAN, KANSAS.
STOVEPIPE AND THIMBLE FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,369, dated September 5, 1893.
Application filed April 17, 1893. Serial No. 470,718. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Beit known that we, WILLIAM H. ScoTT and GEORGE W. WISNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Manhattan, in the county of Riley and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Stovepipe and Thimble Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in stove pipe and thimble fasteners.
The object of the present invention is to provide simple and effective means for securing a thimble in a stove hole, and for fastening a stove pipe to the thimble capable of enabling the parts to be readily secured in place and be quickly detached therefrom when desired. f
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings-Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a stove pipe and a portion of a chimney provided with fastening devices, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the inner end of a stove pipe.
Like numerals of reference indicate correspending parts in both the figures of the drawings.
l designates a thimble, provided at its outer end with an annular flange 2 and having secured at its inner end by rivets or other fastening devices iieXible clips 3 having their outer ends 4bent at rghtangles to the length of the thimble to engage the inner wall of the chimney to prevent the withdrawal of the thimble. The outer ends of the clips 3 are bent at an angle to provide stops 5, which limit the inward movement of the stove pipe 6. The stove pipe 6 is provided at its inner end with an L-shaped or bayonet slot 7, adapted to engage a bolt 8 or other projection, whereby the stove pipe is securely fastened within the thimble. In placing the stove pipe in the thimble the longitudinal branch of the slot is brought opposite the bolt, after which the stove pipe is moved inward to bring the bolt at the transverse branch when the stove pipe is turned to lock it. A perforated lug 9 is arranged on the exterior of the stove pipe near the inner end a short distance from the bayonet slot and has secured to it astay wire lO, which may be attached by a bolt l1 or other fastening device with other sections of a stove pipe to enable all the sections to be connected with the chimney to prevent the stove pipe from accidentally collapsing.
It will be seen that the stove pipe and thimble fastenings are simple and inexpensive in construction, that they are positive and reliable and may be readily applied to a stove pipe and thimble, and that they will enable those parts to be quickly secured in proper n position in the stove hole of a chimney.
Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What we claim is- The combination of a stove pipe thimble provided at its outer end with an annular iiange and having between its ends an inwardly extending bolt, the clips secured to the inner end of the thimble and having their outer ends bent outwardly atan angleandtheir other ends bent inwardly atan angle, a stove pipe provided With'a perforated lug and having a bayonet slot to engage said bolt, and a stay wire secured to the perforated lug, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own We have hereto aflixed our signatures in the presenceV of two witnesses.
