NUT LOCK.

LOU C. DASHNER AND HENRY E. JACOBS ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO ALONZO VIRGINIA.
NUT-LOCK.
Application filed June 26, 1912.
To (ZZZ whom it may cone-em.-
Be it known that we, LOU C. DASHNER and HENRY E. JACOBS, citizens of the United States, residing at Point Pleasant, in the county of Mason and State of lVest Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of nut locks.
Heretofore the utility of nut locks of different types has been questioned by reason of their failure to perform the function to which they are adapted. hen nut locks of the pawl and ratchet type are provided in connection with different structures it has been found that the pivot point of the pawl is often broken by the strain which is exerted thereupon and it is our object to overcome this difficulty and provide means whereby the strain which is exerted upon the pawl is not disposed entirely upon the pivot point.
-With the above and other objects in view our invention consists in such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing our invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of our invention shown applied to an ordinary rail joint. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is a detail view.
The rails and the fish plates 2 constitute an ordinary rail joint and in connection with which our invention has been illustrated. A bolt 3 extends through the fish plates and the web of the rails and has operative thereon, as is well known, a nut 4. Before the nut is screwed upon the bolt, the body portion of our invention is disposed in place. This body portion consists of a member 5 which has its lower end bent at right angles thereto as shown at 6 and performs the subsidiary function of a washer. A washer 7 which has teeth 8 formed thereon is then disposed in place, the said washer Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 706,012.
carrying a collar 9 which receives the nut, as is clearly shown. By the provision of the collar it is apparent that the nut cannot be rotated without transmitting motion to the washer 7.
The pawl which is devised consists of a body portion 10 which is pivoted to the member 5 as shown at 11 and which has a portion thereof extending upwardly as at 12 so as to form a tongue for engagement with the teeth 8. The lower edge of the pawl is normally disposed in parallel relation to the bent portion 6 of the member 5. However, when the movement of the nut is reversed the pawl will be forced through the medium of the washer 7 into engagement with the bent portion, thereby exerting more pressure thereupon than upon the pivot point.
From the foregoing, it will be readily realized that the nut which we have devised consists of but a few simple parts which can be manufactured at a very low cost and sold at a minimum. It is also thought that the advantages and novel features of our device will be readily appreciated.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a rail joint, comprising rails and fish plates secured thereto, of a bolt extending through said fish plates and said rails, a member disposed about said bolt and having its under side bent at right angles to the body portion thereof, a washer disposed upon said bolt, said washer being provided with a squared collar, a nut carried by the said collar and rotatable with said washer, teeth formed upon said washer, a pawl pivoted upon said member and having a portion thereof in engagement with said bent portion, a portion of said pawl adapted to engage said teeth, whereby the reverse movement of said washer and said nut is prevented, for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a rail joint, comprising rails and fish plates attached thereto, of a bolt extending through said rails and said fish plates, a member disposed about said bolt and having its under side bent at right angles to the body portion thereof, a washer disposed upon said bolt and in engagement with said member, said washer being provided with a squared collar, a nut disposed within said collar and operative ment of said washer is prevented, for the upon said bolt, said nut being rotatable with purpose described.
