LOCKING DEVICE FOR BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,004, dated May 2, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER FILTEAU, of the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices for Bottle- Stoppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention has for its object to provide IO a device that will in being set in place automatically lock itself against displacement, and to this end I mount a series of springfingers upon aring of sufflcient interior diameter to fit over the flanged neck of a bottle, the fingers being normally set a distance diametrically apart greater than the periphery of said flanged neck. A cap takes over said neck and is adapted to be rigidly connected to said ring, and means are provided to cause said spring-fingers to be forced and held beneath the flange of the neck, these means preferably consisting of an inclined plane formed upon the upper end of each finger, an oppositely-inclined plane formed on the interior of said cap, and a screw-thread connection between the lower end ofsaid cap and said fingers.
For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings, in which like symbols indicate the same parts, and wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of the flanged neck of a bottle provided with my invention, the locking-cap being ready to be set 5 in place; Fig. 2, a similar View with the cap set in place; Fig. 3, a detail inside View of the cap, and Fig. 4 a detail plan view of the rmg.
The ring 5 is of aninterior diameter slightly 40 greater than the periphery of the flange 6,
usually formed upon the neck 7 of a bottle.
A series of preferably four spring-fingers are carried by the upper side of the ring, and
each is constructed of a resilient strip having 5 its upper end inwardly offset at an angle, as
at 8, while the lower portion thereof is outwardly offset, as at 11, and the outside thereof screw-threaded, as at 9. A cap 10, of an interior diameter slightly greater than the periphery of the flange 6, has the portion of the interior thereof adjacent to its edge increased in diameter and screw-threaded, as at 12, and the line of juncture of said screwthreaded portion and the main interior portion beveled, as at 13.
An ordinary cork 14 can, as I prefer, be used to act as a stopper, or, if desired, a cork can be permanently carried within the cap. To look a stopper in place according to the present embodiment of myinvention, the ring is first slipped over the flanged neck of the bottle and the cap secured in place. (See Figs. 1 and 3.) The edge of the cap then bears upon the upper portion of the offset portions 11 of the fingers and forces them inwardly until the screw-threads take, after which, while the cap is being screwed into place, the inclined portion of the interior of the cap bears upon the-inwardly-inclined upper ends 9 of the fingers and forces them beneath the flange.
What I claim is as follows:
The combination with the flanged neck of a'bottle, of the ring 5; spring-fingers carried by said ring, and each consisting of a resilient strip inwardly offset at its upper end at an angle, as at 8, and outwardly offset at its lower end, as at 11, and screw-threaded as at 9, a cap 10, having its interior screw-threaded as at 12, and beveled, as at 13, to bear on the spring-fingers and force their ends under the flange 6, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
