HARRY F. BUSHONG, or PORTLAND, OREGON, ASSIGNQR, BY MES'NEASSIGN- MENTS, TO KALAMAZOO LOOSE LEAF BINDER COMPANY, A CORPORA- TION. I
LOOSE-LEAF LEDGERf Specification of Letters Patent. I
Patented Apri123, 1907.
Application filedjJuly 15,1904. Serial No. 216.664.
ing had to the accompanying drawings as constituting a part thereof. I,
This invention has for its object to obtain a loose leaf book comprising two cover sections united by binding cords which are tight- .ened and'released again by suitable means to remova'bly clamp the leaves bound between the covers, and having further a back strip which'will be automatically adjusted by the adjustment of the clamping means, and the opening and closing of the book.
I accomplish my object by providing a transversely arranged bar, longitudinally movable in one of the cover sections to which bar the ends of the binding cords are secured, and. by which bar such ends are tightened and released again to clamp the binding edges of the cover sections upon the bound leaves. I
furthermore, provide aback strip, one or both ends of which telescope in a pocket or pockets therefor made on the exterior of the cover or covers and I connect one of said telescoping edges by band's, preferably elastic, with said adjustable bar so that the adjustment of said bar, and therewith the covers to the leaves inserted between the covers will simultaneously relatively adjust the back strip.
In the drawings, Figure 1, is apartial plan section of the exterior half of the two cover sections of my book, also showing means for tightening the binding cords .and .the described telescoping back strip and means for relatively adjusting the latter. Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 20-21 of Fig. 1, with the interior parts removed. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the adjustable bar it.
In the drawings, similar letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The means for adjustably connecting the two cover-sections a, a, in their general construction comprise a bar n, laterally adjustable in the cover section a by a screw rod 0, inserted in a bearing 1) and socket q, and binding cords 72,, h, the extremities of which ,are fastened to the'cover section a and the barn. The binding edges of the cover sections are provided with clamping jaws d, e, pivoted in extensions 1), 'c, and through which clamping jaws the binding cords pass. The details of this part of the construction of my book are unimportant to this invention, however. v
The material 3 covering the exterior .of each of'the cover sections is lapped across, to
provide pockets 4 on the exterior of the cover sections in which are inserted and telescoped the ends ofthe back strip y. One of the ends of the back strip may be permanently fastened to the cover section a, if desired, and. the other end alone telescope. But as shown both ends of the back strip telescope in the cover sections.
To hold the back strip in proper relation to the thickness of the leaves bound between the cover section and also to the opening and closing of the book, the end of the back strip y telescoping in the cover section a is fastened to the latter in a pocket 4 by means of elastic'bands w, w. The opposite end of the back strip telescopes and is fastened in a like pocket 4 by means of elastic bands 11/, w, to the adjustable bar n. To admit of such attachment, the wall 5 of the body of the cover section a is made with longitudinal slots 2, 2, through which extend and in which slide the staples or other means fastening the bandsw, w, to the bar it. Of course, a single band would answer for attaching the ends of the back strip to thecover section a and the adjustable bar a, but two bands are preferred because distributing the pull more evenly. It is thus evident that the adjustment of the bar n to bind the inserted said pockets; connections for said back strip to said binding cord" adjusting means and t0 the opposite cover, for-the purpose specified. I
to telescope Within said pockets; and a connection-for said back strip to said adjustable bar, for the purpose specified. j
The combination of the covers; binding cords therefor; an adjustable bar carried 1 by one of said covers, for tightening said 1 binding cords; rneans-for adjusting said bar; 15
1 pockets in the exterior of the said covers; a-
! back-strip arranged to telescope within said pockets; and connections for said back-strip to said adjustable barffor the purposespeci- In witness whereof I have hereunto affixed my. signature in the presence of two".
Witnesses Witnesses: I
' T. J. GEIsLER,
NORA MoCLURE.
