ROVEIENT IN REPAIRING- WHIPS.

Havemin the county of New Haven, and State of Gonnecticut, have invented a new'Improvementin Repairing Whips; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,

and the letters .of reference marked thereon, to bel a full, clear, and exact description `of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this speciiication,4 and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in whips for which Letters .Patentwere 'granted to me, bearing date February ll, 1 868. In the employment of that invention, I nd that on a braided whip the braid is sometimes liable to work off with the tube, and thus, to a certain extent, defeat the object of that invention,

Ya difficulty which this invention ,is designed to overcome, Vwhich consists in cutting away the covering at theend of the stock or tip, or the two portions which are to be secured together, down to the solid material, and placing thereon a ferrule, which. will rest against the shoulder formed by cutting away, as aforesaid, the said ferrule being of such thickness as will permit it to enter the tube, and allow the screwing of the tube on to the covering of the Whip.

In order that others may fully understand my invention, Iwill describe the same. as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

At the broken place in the Whip, as denoted in iig. 2, I cut away'the covering for a short dist-ance, so as to form a shoulder, as at a,.g. 3; then, o n to the endl place a fer-rude, d, and secure it thereto, hard down against the covering, in any convenient manner. This forms a protection for the end, and prevents the cover- Ving from slipping up on the stock. I do this to both parts, if both are covered. Then I place thereon the tube A, securingit on -toboth'en'ds, as seen in jigs. 1 and 5,' and as fully described in my former patent,

Preparing the-ends of whips to be joined by the tube A, by seeming thereon'the ferrule d, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
