To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, F. PINCKARD, of New Orleans, in the parish oi' Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Sanitary Brace; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

The drawing represents a perspective view ot my new sanitary brace.

The object of this invention is to force persons to keep their mouths closed and to breathe through their noses during sleep.

The nostrils are the natural and proper ch annels for breath, and the unnatural substitution, by a great number of persons, of. the mouth for that purpose causes snoring, an undue absorption of malarious and infectious air, and a dryness of the palate, tongue, and lips, all of which are injurious to health.

My invention will aid nature in foncing the breath through the proper and excluding it from the wrong channels, without being in any way detrimental or injurious to the human system.

The invention consists of three straps, which are united so as to t smoothly the upper portion of the human head, and one strap adapted to t under the chin and support the saine, the same to be united by two elastic straps,

(or straps adjustable by buckles or slides,) ex' tending perpendicularly along the temples, and being made fast above and below to the "head and chin pieces, thus forming a brace capable of firmly compressing the jaws. To this is added a narrow elastic strap to reach longitudinally along the under lip and press it gently against the upper lip, the two ends being made fast, one to each of the templestraps or upper part of the chin-strap, and may be adjustable either with buckles or slides or the elasticity of this lip-str. p. By these means the mouth will be kept effectual] y shut t'or the aforementioned purpose.

A in the drawing represents a strap, made of linen, silk, leather, or other suitable fabric, and is intended to reach from the upper part of one temple, directly over the top of the head, to the upper part of the opposite temple.

B is a strap to reach around the back of the head and unite with the two ends of A, just above or near the ears.

C is a similar strap, to be united to the top center of A, and pass along the top and down the back of the head, and unite with the center of B. b is the strap which passes under and supports the chin, its two ends being fastened to the ends of A, either by a buckle, a, or otherwise; or the temple-straps E E may, it' desired, connect b and A, and thereby form the union between the head and chin braces.

D is the lip-strap, passing longitudinally along the under lip, the two ends uniting with two two sides of the united head and chinbrace, the precise points of juncture to vary in accordance with the length of the chin.

The straps B and C may be arranged differently to effect the object of keeping A in its place; or a skull-cap may be substituted in place of A, B, and C, composed of a single piece of silk or cloth or net-work, or other suitable material.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The sanitary brace constructed, arranged, and operating as herein described, for the purpose specified.
