To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JARvIs B. WHrrE, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes- Driers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same', sufcient to enable others skilled in the'art to whiclry my invention appertains, to fully understand and use thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part o'f this specilication, and which represent a perspective view of my invention.

The nature of' my invention consists in hinging a part of the standard of a clothes-drier to a stationary part near its base,'so that the hinged part may be lowered to a window or door, by means of a cord and pulley,and held in position by the pawl and ratchet, the clothes hung on, and the same elevated out of reach of thieves.

A, in the drawings, may represent a standard, which may be secured to feet B B, or directly in the ground in a yard. l

Hinged to the standard at a, is another standard C,

proded at the top with a pin, c, over which slides a sleeve, D, provided with brackets E, between which the arms F are pivoted. These arms can be folded parallel with the standard C, and are held in spread position by means of pins f. l

To the standard C, at a proper height, is secured one end of a strap, G, which, passing over a roller, g, in a slot, h, instandard A, is secured at .its other end to a windlass, H, provided with a ratchet-wheel, h', and spring-pawl In households where a great deal of washing is done, the heavy baskets, with clothes to be dried, have to be carried into the yard, to be placed on lines or clothesdiers.

I can lower the standard C, which I make o f any,

suitable and desired height, to the window of the room in which the washing is done. YThe clothes are hung upon one part of rope I, between two arms E, the sleeve D'lturned around, and another part of the rope ccvered,'and so on untilall the clothes are hung upon the rope. `.If one set of arms is not enough, two or three may be secured, one above .the other, on standard C, which is then, by means of belt or strap G, elevated into vertical line, the clothes being up at a height beyond the reach of thieves. l Y

For securitys sake, the standard. A may be hollow, and the belt-run through it and another slot on to the windlass, which may be encased in a box and locked up.

I am aware that the standard has been pivoted near the top, and partially lowered, and this I do not claim.

What I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is

The clothes-drier, consisting of the standard A, part C hinged near the-foot of standard A, and carrying the clothes-rack D E F, straps G, and windlass H, all ar# ranged and operating substantially as and for the purposessct forth JARVIS B. WHITE.
