My invention consists of a clothes and towel drier or rack possessing novel features, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

Referring to the drawings, A represents an upright frame of the rack, the same having flanged side pieces, a a', forming ways a, within which is tted the slide B, to whose upper end is pivoted a shelf, C, which, when the drier or lrack is in service, occupies a horizontal position and abuts against the slide B, so as to be properly braced thereagainst, said shelf being fitted between the flanges a,where by it may be folded against the slide and thus folded within the frame A.

To the shelf C is pivoted a series of arms, D, the pivots thereof being vertical, sov as to permit the arms to be spread, as in Fig. 2, in

which position a number of clothes, towels, Sac., may be readily hung on said arms.

Connected with the slide B is a cord, E, for readily raising said slide and controlling it as it descends, and in the shelf C is a slot, F, of angular form, or somewhat L shape, one limb, b, of said slot being open at the outer end of the shelf, so as to receive said cord E, the other limb, c, being also adapted to receive said oord when moved laterally from the inner end ofthe limb b. The inner limb, c, of said slot guides and retains the cord E, and the outer limb, I, of said slot allows the with- Vdrawal of said cord.

To the upper end of the frame A is attached a pulley, G, which is of a locking'order, so

that when the cord E ,is passed around one part of the spiral groove of said pulley itloeks with the frame of the pulley, and thus holds the slide in the position to which it is raised. It will be seen that when the cord is in the limb b of the slot F the slide may be readily raised to the top of the frame A, thus accordingly elevating the arms D with the clothes, e. The cord is then moved into the limb c and letgo77 slightly, whereby the cord is run on the locking part of the pulley G and clamped against the frame A, 'the slide, with the clothes, &c., on the arms, remaining in its elevated position. On the sides of the slide are mounted pulleys or rollers H, which run on the frame A and serve to ease the motions of the slide, it being evident that outward strain isimparted to lower the clothes the cord is moved` into 'the limb c of 65 to said slide, owing to the weight of clothes,

&e., superimposed on the arms. Then the slide is at the bottom of the frame, the shelf and arms may be swung from their right-angular position and folded into the frame parallel therewith. A screw, J, passed through the side of the frame, is tightened against the shelf, thus preventing movement of the same in any direction and unfolding of the parts, and the arms may be spread, so that their outer ends are fitted between the fianges of the frame A and prevented from being broken or caught, the drier or rack now being in condition for packing, transportation, stowage, 82e.

The cord E forms an angle in passing from slot cto the point of attachment to slide B. Vhen the free end of said cord is drawn upon, the part of the cord in contact with the shelf necessarily assists in supporting the weight thereof and lessens the strain on the hinge of said shelf.
