CLARENCE H. BOOTH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
BATH-TUB-LEG FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.Eatenteo. March 12, 1907.
Application filed June 16, 1906. Serial No. 321.970.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLARENCE H. BOOTH, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath-Tub-Leg Fastenings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its particular object to provide a leg-fastening especially adapted for seamless steel bath-tubs which are stamped from a single piece of sheet-steel; and the invention consists in the specific construction and arrangement of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
In the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical cross-sec tion through one of the legs of the bath-tub, and Fig. 2 is a detached plan of the metal plate forming the leg-seat. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of a bath-tub provided with my leg fastening, the legs being removed.
At each of four points upon its rounded portions the body A of the tub is reinforced by a substantially circular metal plate B, which is shaped in conformity to the rounded portions and united thereto by welding, soldering, or brazing. This plate has formed in it a central depression a of substantially rectangular shape and suitable size and depth to form a nut-seat surrounding the nut on three sides and having a lateral side opening formed by depressing the plate on one side of a longitudinal slit in the plate and a slot 1) in its bottom for the lateral insertion and re moval of the leg-fastening bolt D.
C represents one of the four legs. It is formed with a shank 0, extending inwardly beneath the depressed portion forming the seat thereof and has a bolt-hole registering with the slot in the plate B.
The fastening-bolt passes through the slot b and through the shank and is provided with a-tightening-nut d on the under side of the shank.
The leg extends upwardly above the shank and terminates in an upper margin 6, which conforms to the outline of the plate B and marginally contacts therewith for a portion of its circumference.
As the plates B are applied to the curved portions of the body which intervene between the horizontal bottom and vertical sides the weight will be carried upon the in the slightest above what would be required for the mere body of the tub.
Other advantages of my leg-fastening are that it adds but little weight to the tub and that it is strong, simple, and easily applied.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A seamless steel bath-tub provided at four points upon the curved portions intervening between its bottom and sides with re inforcing plates shaped to fit against the curved portions and united thereto, each plate formed with a central depression laterally open on one side and provided with a slot in its bottom, a leg having a shank proj ecting inwardly beneath the depression and a securing-bolt passing through the shank and the plate and having its head seated in the depression thereof.
2. A seamless steel bath-tub provided at each of four points upon the curved portions of its body intervening between the bottom and sides thereof with reinforcing-plates conforming to the shape of the tub and united thereto, each plate formed with a central depression adapted to form a nut-seat for the securing-bolt of a detachable supporting-leg, each plate and its depressed portion being wholly within the angle formed by the sides and bottom of the tub and the depressed por- I tions forming the leg-rests for the tub.
3. The combination of a bath-tub, aleg-fast-ening comprising a sheet-metal disk shaped in conformity to the rounded portions of the tub intervening between its bottom and sides and united thereto, said disk provided with a central depression laterally open at the inner side and adapted to form a nut-seat for the securing-bolt of the leg, a leg having a shank projecting inwardly beneath said depressed portion of the plate and a securing-bolt passing through said shank and plate and having its tightening-nut on the lower end of the bolt beneath the shank of the leg, the leg extending upwardly above the shank and surrounding with its marginal upper edge the upper marginal portion of the plate and contacting therewith.
4. The combination of a bath-tub, a leg-fastening comprising a sheet-metal disk shaped in conformity to the curved portions intervening between the bottom and sides of the body of the tub and united thereto, the disk formed with a central depression open laterally and adapted to receive the securing-bolt of the leg and form a nut-seat for the head thereof, a leg having an inwardly-projecting shank forming a bearing for the depressed portion of the sheet-metal disk, and a bolt securing the shank to the depressed portion of the metal. disk, said metal disk and its depressed portion being Wholly within the angle formed by the sides and bottom of the tub and the leg projecting upwardly above the shank and marginally surrounding and contacting with the marginal outer portion of the disk. I
5. A seamless steel bath-tub provided at each of four points of its body portion with a reinforcing-plate united thereto and conforming to the shape of the tub, each plate formed with a central depression adapted to form a nut-seat for the securing-bolt of a detachable supporting-leg.
6. A seamless steel bath-tub provided at four points on the under side of its body portion with reinforcing-plates conforming to the shape of the tub and united thereto, each plate formed with a depressed portion, and a supporting-leg detachably secured to the depressed portion of each plate.
7. The combination with a seamless steel bath-tub, of a leg-fastening comprising a reinforcing-plate united to the body of the bathtub and provided With a depressed portion and a leg detachably secured to the depressed portion, said depressed portion being formed on one side of a longitudinal slit in the plate and forming a nut-seat, open on one side, tor the securing-bolt of the leg.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE H. BOOTH.
