Laim Parent No. 34,680, dazed Decanter-s, 186s.
IMPRovED WEATHER-STRIP. f
v MP- P- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1ELIJAH CARPENTER, of Garbondale, in the county of Luzerne, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in W'eather-Strips; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which-- Figure l isa perspective idew of my invention, with a portion of plate A broken away, and
Figure 2, a section through line a: x, iig. 1.
The object of this invention is to constructa weatherstrip for doors, which, while attached to the threshold, and requiring no change whatever in the construction ofthe door, shall not ater the shape of the threshold, nor in any way diminish its strength or impair its beauty.
To accomplish this object, 1 rebate the outer upper edgev of the threshold, and fill the space where the .wood is ,removed with avmetallic weather-strip, A,.so
shaped, as, when lying fiat, to preserve the original form and dimensions of the threshold.
The plate A is thus slightly inclined, and its lower edge is rounded, while its upper edge is left sharp. At each end it isl provided with the projections a a', the lower one extending into a horizontal slot, e, and the upper one into a vertical slot,` ci, in the jamb, or' in a plate, E, attached to the jamb.
A lever, B, pivoted at b, lies under the upper edge of the plate A, in a; slot or chamber in the threshold, made for the purpose.
One end presses up against the upper edge of plate A, while' the other is pressed upon by a lever, D, pivoted at d, and projecting slightlyabove the threshold, .as seen in figs. l and 2. v
As the door closes, it presses down the lever D, thereby actuating lever B, and .throwin g the upper edge of plate .A up again st the under edge of the door, or against the under edge of a horizontal cleat, E', fixed to the door,
tand outward, so as to form a'perfect water-shed, preventing the rain and snow from driving under the doorinto the house, or filling up and freezing in the cavity occupied by the two levers.
The whole apparatus is simple, not liable to get out of order, and can be applied to any form of threshold or vdoor at little expense. O
Having thus fullydescribed my invention,
What I claim, and desire tosecure by Letters Paterrt of the United States, is- Y 1. lIhe arrangement of the weather-strip A, having the two proj ections, a al', with the slots e e in the plates E E, attached to the jamb, or in the iamb itself, substantially as herein described an'd shown.
2. The combination of they strip A, levers BD, andv door, when the several parts are constructed and arranged to operate in the manner described and shown,
and for the purposes specified. Y
f ELIJ AH CARPENTER.
