Description
@hierMee? me-r11?ffirraj .rt-maratea 78,980, dated June, 1e, 1868,;l
IMPROVBD WEATHER-eral?.
d'2 Stilwell referrer tu' in, time Entert v''rain vmzrmzfxbim] gtr-t hf ttt time TGALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN! l Be it known that`A I, 'J'.E; LINDSLY, of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart, State of Indiana, have invented a new andirnprovedjill and Weather-Strip for Doors; .and I do herehydeclare that thefollowing is a full, clear, ,and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.' reference being had tothe laccompartying drawings forming part of" this specileation. This invention relates toanew and improved sill and weather-strip for doors, and isan improvement `on a sill and weather-strip for which Letters Patent were grsn'tedto me, bearing date June 19, 1866.
Thisoriginal patented. devicecorisistsy of a fixed metallic strip or cap, placed over the sill ofthe door, so as to preserve the latter vfrom Awear, and also excludewind and rain.
l It is not aseieien't as it mightbe in the latter respect, and the object of the present inventionisi'to obviate `that diiiiculty, and to this end it consists in having the metallic stripper cap arranged and applied tothe sill in such a manner as to be movable, and capable of beinglraised automatically by the closing of the door, so as to fit snugly against the lower edge'of the same when closed, and e'ectually exclude wlnd,rain,. and snowl In the accompanying sheet of drawings- *I Figure 1 is a transverse vertical sectionv fof the lower part of a door and door-frame, having my invention applied, x'x, iig.l 2, showing the line of section. I
Figure 2 a horizontalsection of the same, taken. in the line y y, g. 1L Similar letters .of reference indicate correspondingparts.' A represents a portion'otV a' door-Iframe,v l u B the sill thereof,'a'nd v Cthe door, the latter being hinged to the'frame in the Iusual or in any proper manner. D represents the outer portion or. tread of vthe sill. at the outer side of the door, on' the upper surface of which there is secured a lnetal plate, Ef Cast iron will probably be generallyI used.
This vplate is designed "te have a grooved or corrugated upperl surface, to prevent persons from slipping upon it, and near its inner edge there is a longitudinal groove, af to receive thefront. edge of a'metal strip or cap, F, which is fitted overthe sill B, but not bolted thereto, it being merely Iset over it, and allowed torise and fall freely to a certain extent, the front edge of the strip or`cap which rests in the groove`a,servin'g as a.
bearing for the strip or cap--to work in or against, the plate E being provided with lugs b, one or more, to retain the strip or cafp'F in place.'y
To one side'of the door-`rau1e A, ntits lowerY part, there is attached abent lever, G, which is fitted. and worlis in a'recessl in` the sill B, 'at one 'end of the same, and projects beyond the rear part of thestrip'orcap, as shown clearly'rin ig..1, l i l i This lever works'on apivot, d, :1nd its upper part extends upward A at the side of the frame .AV in such a manner as to bo vacted upon by the door C lwhen it closes.
The door, asit closes, strikes the upper end of said lever, and thereby forces the lower part of the, lever npward, which'tbmws upward the inner part of the strip or cap snugly` against the lower edge of the door, as shown in fig. 1, forming a perfectly -weather-proof joint. V
When'the doot-is opened, the strip or cap drops or falls by its own gravity over the Sill, as shown in red.
The strip or cap will probably be ,nade of'cast iron, and it will 4be seen that the strip or cap will, as in the original device, preservethe wooden sill from wear, but will servemuch more eiliciently as a'weather-strp, owing -to tbe movement allowed it and the means employed to cause it to fit snugly against the bottom or dower edge of the door es the'lat'terris closed'.
The plete E also preserves the tread port-ion D of the' sill.
'll claim as new, and desire yto secure by Letters Patenti The metal plate E, eppliedlo thebnterportion or tread D of the sill, in ,combination with the metal'ls'trip or cap F and lever G, all arrangedsubstantially as and for the'purpose setv forth. y
