To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, su s (husrm, 6f the city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge-Boxes, of which the following specification embraces a full and clear de-. scription, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

The leading feature of my improvement consists in the construction and adaptation of a solid cartridgeblock or holder, (simply perforated with holes, for the partial reception of the cartridges, above and below, parallel to its broader faces, and at right angles to its greater length,) in contradistinction to blocks intended to be equivalent in purpose or advantage of use, that are compound, such as those having septa, frames, diaphragms, 860., or that are of two parts, one hinged to the other, so that the upper section having been emptied, it ,may be turned over and outward, and hang by the side of the lower section of such'block or holder, to give access to the cartridges in the latter section.

My device avoids the defects of all these, such inconvenience of manipulation, cost of construction,

liability to derangement, bulk, (other things equal,)

weight, 850., and every ounce is of importance in a cartridge-box, and not less so, simplicity and ease of use in placing or withdrawing. the cartridges, as is well 'tridge-holder is in no way attached to the cartridgebox proper, as so called.

As will be readily comprehended, therefore, in a device of this nature, apparently trifling modifications maybe of much importance.

To adapt the cartridge-box at present most approved to the use with it of my cartridge-block or holder, I make but slight modifications in the former, and in nowise of a detrimental character.

For further explanations, I will now refer to the ac .a cartridge-box, (withthe slight modifications referred to,) full size, with its ordinary flap, A, raised, and in part torn off, toafiord room on the sheet, is the.

case in Figure 2, which' is a section through the line a; m on fig. 1, and at right angles to the latter.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in both figures.

In fig. 1, the full lines in black represent the exterior of the cartridge-box, and the black dotted lines its interior dimensions. In either lower corner or interior angle of it is riveted, or otherwise fastened, a ledge or batten, a a, say of sole-leather, the purpose of which will be presently understood.

In'this cartridge-box, in lieu of the old fixed block f wood, perforated above only, for holding the cariidges, and, in lieu of the other compound cartridgeholding blocks or devicesbefore referred to, I insert a This block or holder, B, is shown in full red lines iii the same figure, (1,) and thetwo outermost ca1tridge-' receptacles, above and below, as suificient for illustration, are shown in red dotted lines a s also in position,

B is so fitted as to be readily withdrawn from the cartridge-box when its upper tier of cartridges has been exhausted, and be inverted and replaced, thus presenting a second full tier of cartridges in position of the first.

To keep the cartridges in'the lower tier from dropping out of their places during this operation, or, in fact, at any time, there is a leather flap fastened'by a line of screws to the front face of B. (See fig. 1.)

This flap reaches down, as shown in full bluelines, (same figure,) and laps under and over the lower tier of cartridges, and up against the back of the block, as shown by the broken blue lines in the same figure, ending with a perforated tongue, fastening over the knob or button 0, fixed in-the block.

To prevent the flap, and so, mediately, the lower tier of cartridges from being jammed or jolted against the bottom of their cartridge-box while being carried, there are fixed in the lower angles of the latter, two ledges or battens, a. a, before mentioned, upon which the ends of the cartridge-carrier block are supported.

. In lieu of the fiont wallso to denominate itof the cartridge-box being left'flush, or nearly so, with the top of the block, fixed, as heretofore usual, I cut it down, as shown by the line a. x, fig. 1, to facilitate the grasp of the fingers upon B, when it is desired to invert it, as explained.

Uantridge-boxes, as'usually made, have an inner flap, beside A, .on which are two side lugs or cars, that, when their accompanying flap is down, intercepting access to the interior of the cartridge-box, lap over and alongside its two ends.

Now, inasmuch as I dispense with. such inner flap, except as attached to my cartridge-block, for the purpose explained, and as said lugs or ears are deemed desirable, I retain them, but transpose them to the outer or main cover or flap A, as'represented on the drawing by (l d.

The ordinary cartridge-box has upon its front a pocket with a flap, which I also employ, but of less vertical depth. p

This is not shown on fig. 1, but is shown at E in the sectional fig. 2.

The various straps and buckles belonging to regulation cartridge-boxes are unchanged, and so not shown.

The section, as shown by fig. 2, represents four of the cartridge-receptacles, e, bisected through the centre, and the two cartridges in the receptacles -next beyond in place.

The nature of my invention, it is deemed, will now be fully understood.

What I claim as .new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent; is- 1. The removable carrier-block B, when provided with its own flap, and adapted to fit an outer case or cartridge-box, substantially as and for the purposes described.

-2. In combination with the cartridge-carrier block B and the outer ease or cartridge-box, the ledges or battens a, applied in the mann'erand for the purpose described.
