TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, HIRAM RICHMOND, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Match-Safe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. i

This invention relates to a new and improved match-safe or box for holding matches.

The invention consists in attaching a protecting-plate or lid to the top of a box, provided with a slot or opening in its front, of such dimensions that the-matches maybe grasped by the thumb and finger, and removed from the box, as required for use.

The object of the invention is to' obtain a match-safe or box which will admit of the matches being removed or taken therefrom with greater facility than usual, and without the liability of spilling or. scattering any out from the box while in the act of withdrawing one or more from the same.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure 1 is a front view of my invention.

A represents a plate, to which a box, B, is attached, and also the lid, C, of. the box, the lid being so hung,

or attached to the-plate that its hinges or joints, 0, will be higher than its front or disengaged end;

The plate A has one or more holes, by which the device may be suspended to a wall or other fixture.

The front of the box B has a slot or opening, I), sufficiently wide to admit of the thumb and finger being passed through it, and the front part of the lid C has an opening, 0, made init, which is in line with the opening 6.

At the bottom of the box B there are ledges d, for the matches to rest upon.

In withdrawing the matches from the box, all that is required is simply to pass the thumb and finger through the opening 6, and raise them outiof the box, the lid being raised under the upward movement of the thumb and finger, and closing by its own gravity, as the thumb and finger are drawn from the box.

By this arrangement the matches may be drawn from the safe or box with the greatest facility, and without the liability of dropping or spilling the matches as they are taken from the safe or box.

The lower part of the plate A, below the box, may be corrugated, as shown at e, for the purpose of rubbing the matches upon to ignite them.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The match-safe, constructed as described, of the back plate A, the box B, having the vertical opening I), for the thumb and finger, and the inclined hinged lid C, having the opening a, corresponding to opening 6 in the box, all arranged as described, for the purpose specified.
