LATCH FOR GATES AND THE LIKE.
UNITED STATIEb ATENT FFIGE,
LATCH FOR GATES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 26, 1907.
Application filed November 24, 1906. Serial No. 344.964:-
To ail whom zit 772/(J/Z/ concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BLoN Ln BOURGEOIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Convent, Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Latches for Gates'and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in latches designed for use in connection with gates, blinds, and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, economical, and eflicient latch capable of easy adjustment and free from any liability of becoming stuck or wedged.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view.
Referring by reference characters to the drawings, the numeral 3 designates a pivoted latch, and 4 a keeper or retainer with which the latch engages, one of these being carried by the gate or other swinging part and the other by the post or its equivalent. The latch is pivoted between the parallel Walls 5 of a carrying member 5 upon a cross-bolt 6,
which passes through any one of a plurality j of transverse holes 7 in the carrying member' The cross-bolt has a removable nut for scourthe alining semicircular recesses form the complete cylindrical bolt-holes. By this arrangement all necessity of boring or drilling is avoided. I do not Wish, however, to be understood as limiting myself to this specific manner of forming the supporting members.
The latch 4 has a head 4 with an inclined face 49 and shoulder 4. It extends through the carrying member and is provided with abutments or stops a which may conveniently be formed by a short metal bar in serted through an opening in the latch. The stops are provided with two fiat faces disposed at an angle to each other and so arranged that when the latch is raised to the limit of its upward movement one pair of faces 4 contacts with the face of the carrying member and when lowered the other face 4 contacts with said face. Thus there is no wedging action and no danger of the latch sticking.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A gate-latch having a carrying member comprising parallel bars, a pivot-bolt passing through the side bars and through the latch, and means whereby the pivot-bolt may be adjusted vertically of said carrying-frame, substantially as described.
2. A gate latch comprising a carrying ing it in place, so that it may be removed and 1 member consisting of two half members each the latch adjusted up or down according to circumstances or necessities. The carrying member is made of such strength and rigidity that the nut may be screwed very tightly in place to prevent accidental displacement without any danger of binding the latch between the side walls. For convenience in manufacture the carrying menber may be made in two parts, the dividing-line being located centrally of the bolt-holes. This enables me to make the two halves by swaging, and when the two halves are secured together having a plurality of semicircular depressions, means for securing said members togetherjwith the recess in alinement to form cylindrical holes, a bolt for passing through alining holes, and a latch pivoted on the bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
