Description

F. BREMERMAN. Coupling for Wagon Houndsand Plql' e s, No. 84,531; j P-ate'n ted Dec. 1,186.8.
'1" o M@ w y i we? @atwfitttfim WWW FREDRICK BREMERMAN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 84,531, dated December 1, 1868. I
COUPLING FOR THE HO'UNDS AND POLES OI WAG-CNS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, FREDRIGK BREMERMAN, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in the Construction and Arrangement of \Vagons, which relates to the operation of the tongue andthe manner of turning the wagon, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, refer ence being had to the accompanying (h'awings, and the letters marked thereon, of whichv Figure 1 shows the front axle, hounds, coupling, and tongue of a wagon; also a device attached to the hounds which serves as the fifth-wheel, or guide and support, in turning the wagon; also as a ton gue-support and binge.
Figure 2 shows the device shown in fig. 1 detached, showing the bolts for attaching the same, and the bolt by which the tongue is attached, and which serves as a hinge for the same.
Figure 3 shows the view of the device shown in figs. l and 2.
A is the axle.
B, the hounds.
C, the coupling-pole.
1), the tongue. p
E is the segment of a circle, and is designed tosup: port the weight of the hounds and tongue resting upon the end of the coupling-pole O, which is constructed to operate in the same while supporting the weight of the hounds and tongue.
F is abed or chamber to receive the tongue, which is hinged by the bolt G, so as to allow the raising of the tongue.
H are flanges for attaching the device, shown in figs-2 and 3, to the hounds, as shown in fig. l.
The following is the operation of my improvement:
The coupling-pole 0, extending through over the axle, rests under the segment E, and is allowed to slide upon the same the distance required in turning the wagon. Thus the end of the coupling-pole sup: ports the weight of the hounds and tongue. The tongue, resting in the bed or chamber F, is not allowed to fall down below the required position, while the hinge or bolt J allows it to be raised to the required height.
The advantages of this arrangement are seen in the fact, that while it relieves the horses necks of the weight of the tongue and hounds, as when the limbertongue is used, it allows the upward motion of the tongue when required.
The device or attachment above described may be of east or wrought-iron, or other suitable material having the required strength and durability.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as an article of manufacture, is?- The device composed of the segment E, bed or cham ber 1 with flanges H, when constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
FREDRIOK BREMERMAN.
