Description

WILLIAM W; ANDREW, or
GRANDRAPI DS, MICHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 83,818, dated November 10, 1868.
MROVEMBH'I' IN FIELD-BOILER.
o .b-o-
The Schedule referred to in those Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it ma/y concern.-'- V I Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. ANDREW, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Field-Rollers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptiou thereof, reference being had to the accompanyjug drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents the frame of a land-roller, which metal run around its edge, to strengthen and protect it, and is provided on each side, at its forward end, with metal plates, which are provided with holes,re, to receive the clevis to which the double-trees are attached. A block or short bar,.l, is secured upon'the forward bar of the frame A, and over the board B, which serves the double purpose of strengthening said board and of forming a rest for the rear end of the pole J.
F F represent two metallic plates, which are secured upon each side of the board B, at its centre, within the flame A, and which are provided with the vertical grooves H H.
In the centre of the inner sides of the end-pieces, A, of the frame A, are formed sockets to recelvezthe ends of the roller-shafts. v,
O 0 represent two rollers of suitable size and weight,
which are provided with the shafts or axles G G. The
outer ends of these axles are ball-shaped, while their in-ner ends are, made straight or plain. The balls on the outer ends of the axles are inserted in the sockets in the end-rails of the frame, and are there-confined by means of the metallic plates a a. The inner ends of the axles rest in the grooves H H of the plates F F, playing in them, and allowing the inner ends of the roller to rise and fall with the inequalities of the ground.
D represents a box, which extends over the rollers, at a suitable distanccabove them, and which has its ends supported upon the uprights E E, which are erected upon the end-rails of the frame. This box answers, not only as a drivers seat, but also to carry stones, or earth, or any other suitable weight which it may be desirable to place in it.
The tongue J has its rear end confined upon the for- Ward end of the board B, and held in the block I. The clevis operating beneath the tongue, relieves all strain upon the neck-yoke of the tearr. drawing the roller.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The dividing-board B, provided with plates F F and grooves H H, and extended forward of the frame A, under the pole J, where it is perforated (e c e) to receive the clevis, all constructed to operate as specifled; v I
2. The combination of the fiame A, box D, rollers C G, rods G G, and grooved board B, when constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
unto'set my hand, this 6th day of April, 1868.
WILLIAM W. ANDREW. Witnesses:
B. A. HARLAN, Mums Marcus.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have here- I a
