IMPROVEMENT IN SEAL-BOLT FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
T all persons to 'whom these presents vshall come:
Be it known that I, J ASPER P. Moons, of Boston, in the county of Sublk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Bolt-Device for Sealing the Door of a Railway Freight-Carriage; and d'o hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specieation, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top view,.and
Figure 2, a side elevation of it.
In' such drawings- A denotes a bolt, as made with a furcated shank, a. In other Words, the shank is provided with a long slot, b, to open out of the extreme end of the shank, and extend therefrom toward the head b.
A tongue, B, projecting from a head, cone, or point, C, and having one or more holes, e c, made through it, is arranged Within the' slot b, and is pivoted to the shank, near the end thereof, the same being so as to enable the said tongue to be turned on a pin, d, going through it, and the prongs 1) 1) ofthe shank.
At that end or' part of the tongue which is next to the end of the shank, the said tongue is provided with one or two slloulders, e, which, when it is turned around into or about into right angle with -the shank, serves or serve as a stop or stops to arrest its further movement by abutting against the side of the shank.
Preparatory to the bolt being inserted in the staple of a door-hasp of a car, the tongue is to be lnoved wholly within the slot of the shank. The shank is next to beEinserted in the staple until the bolt-head may be nearly or quite brought up against the said staple, after which the tongue should be turned ontot` the slot, and have a leaden seal, (such as is shown in side View in Figure 3,) inserted in onel of its holes c c, and upset by means oi' sealing-stamps, pincers, or other devices well' known to those whose business it is to seal-cars.
The leaden seal, while in the tongue, will prevent it from being moved into the slot far enough to admit of the withdrawal ofthe bolt from the staple.
I sometimes dispense with the point O, and only use a shouldered head in the place of it.l
I am aware that a car-sealin g mechanism, consisting of a perforated bolt and an arched bar or -bowy-formed with holes to receive the bolt, is not new, the hole in the boltbeing for the reception of a leaden rivet or seal; consequently I make no claim thereto. I employ no arched bar or bow to go through the hasp-staple, but in the use of my invention put the 'bolt directly through the said staple.
I claim the combination ofa bolt, anda tongue pivoted to such bolt, the lsame. having one or more holes to receivil a seal for the purpose of holding the tongue at any angle with the bolt.
I also claim the mnnbination and arrangement of the shouldered head with the bolt and tongue pivoted together, and having one or more holes, as described, to receive a seal for the purpose as set forth.
