Be it known that 1, JOSH WVITTMANN, a subject of the German Emperor, and reside at of Munich, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices for Doors and Vindows, of which the following is a specification.
This door or window locking device consists of a bolting-bar stretching over the whole width of the door or window, which is held locked by a simple electric armature contact (latch) and also released by the same. The releasing can also be effected quite automatically by a clockwork adjusted for a certain time.
The invention is shown in Figure 1 on a door in a general view, and in Fig.2 separately and on an enlarged scale.
The bolting-bar a turns on a pin 1) on the door and can be easily removed. The angle irons or hooks c c on the door-post, which serve to receive the bar, are turned in difierent directions. While the bar enters one of them from above, it enters the other from below. This bar is to be so arranged that the end of the same near the door-handle tends to sink down, and thus to turn the bar from the horizontal into a vertical position and allow of opening the door after the bar has moved out of the angle-irons. This tendency of the bar may be attained by a weight 90 at one end of the bar or by placing the pivot b not in the middle of the door, but more on one side, so that the weight is greater on one side of the pivot. g
Near the other end is arranged (on the wall or the door-post) an electromagnet with a locking device, which in the main consists of an armature (Z, engaging with the end of the bar. In the form or construction shown in the drawing this armature is suspended in a journal e, on which it can be easily turned,
and has an extension at the bottom, so that it can also be moved by hand, which extension provides a nose 9, which engages the notched the armature, so that it cannot be raised. The
parts of the bar and armature where they come in contact with each other are preferably covered with platinum. The current is conducted to the bar from the center. If the contact is closed, the armature is attracted and releases the bar, which can then be turned out of the angle-irons, whereupon the door can be opened.
By seizing the armature at its handle it may also be drawn off by hand.
By means of a clockwork the bolting-bar can be released automatically if, for instance, it is desired to release it at a certain time during the time the door is ordinarily kept bolted.
Where this bolt is used, it is absolutely impossible to get into the house or room by opening the door, whereas those who know and have a right to open the door can do so easily or have it done automatically in spite of its being so strongly bolted.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, 1s
In a device for locking doors, shutters, &c.,
the combination of a bolting-bar, longer than the Width of the door, said bolting-bar being i pivoted on the door and adapted to turn from the horizontal position to the vertical position by the action of gravity, retaininghooks for the bolting-bar on each door-post, one open downward and the other open upward, an electromagnet on the door-post, a pivoted armature in conjunction with said electromagnet, a projection on the armature adapted to maintain the bar in the horizontal position and in engagement with the hooks, a prolongation of the armature shaped and adapted as a handle, an electric current operating said electromagnet all substantially as set forth.
