SKIRT-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 29, 1907.
Application med November' 3.1905. .semi No. 285,780.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pontiac, in the county of Livingston and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skirt-Supporters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to ladies apparel and its object is to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive device for ysupporting skirts and holding the waistband of the same and the belt of the waist opposite and in proper relation to each other without exposing the person or underwear. This I accomplish by the means hereinafter fully described and as particularly'set forth inthe claim.
In the drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of a belt having my improved appliance attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the back portion of a ladys waist and the iinier portion of the waistband portion of a ladys skirt constructed so as to permit their beingused in conjunction with my invention. Fig. 3 is a front view of my invention detached from the belt. Fig. 4 is a rear view thereof. Fig.` 5 isa top edge view of the saine.
In the drawings, A represents a belt.
B .represents the belt portion of a womans waist, and O the waist portion of a skirt.
My invention consists of a plate D, of thin sheet metal, which is preferably slightly vider than the belt and is three or four inches ong. verse slot a a. at each end for the adjacent ends of each branch of the belt to be secured in, and near one end thereof it has a vertical recess t, cut in its under edge, which extends about one-half its width. Pivotally secured to the inner side of plate D near the end thereof farthest from recess b is an arm E,
whichy is preferably about half the width of the plate D and has its pivotal point solo- This plate D is provided with a transcated that when placed parallel to plateD its lower edge will be about on the same plane as that of said plate. The length of arm E is such that it extends to very near the opposite end of plate D, and it is slightly deflected or bent outward near its unpivoted end, as shown at c.
All that it is necessary to do in order to practically use my invention is to sew a strip of cloth at its upper and lower-ends to the belt B at the back of the waist so as to form a loop d and to sew one or more hooks e e inside of the waistband of the skirt on each side of the placket. Thus equipped, after the waist is put on the wearer runs arm E of the plate D through loop d and then catches the end of said arm extending through the loop in the recess b of the plate. The ends of the belt are then secured together, and then the skirt is put on, and vafter it is buttoned orotherwise fastened in place the hooks e e are caught over the upper edge of plate' D and securely supported in proper place upon Athe person.
and in correct relation with the waist.
What I claim as new is- In a garment-supporter the combination with awaist having an elongated loop eglsecured to the band thereof of a belt A; a suitable rectangular plate D curved to iit the body of the wearer and secured to said belt, a transverse slit b' in the lower edge of said plate near one end thereof 5 and a broad ilat arm E conforming to the curvature of said plate pivoted at one end to said plate opposite said recess and adapted to pass through said loop on the waist of the wearer and having its free end deflected slightly to enter said slit and engage the opposite side of said plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand @his 21st day of October` 1905.
