SWIMMING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 22, 1507.
Application filed February 28, 1906. Serial No. 303,402.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE T. HUNNE- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Falls, in the county of Cascade, State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swimming-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,.and exact description of the invention, such. as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to swimming appliances.
- One object is to provide a device for attachment to the foot of a swimmer to promote speed.
.Another object of the invention resides in the provision of an exceedingly simple, ineX pensive, durable, and efficient device of the character stated wherein the swimmer will be aided in swimming exercise without undue discomfort.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, pro portion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the clains without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevationof my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the posts for the support of the keel.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference charaoter 1 des1gnates a foot member whose upper face 2 is designed to rest against the sole of the swimmers foot. The ends 3 and 4 are beveled downwardly toward each other toward the bottom 4 of the foot-piece 1. This bottom 4 is provided with a recess 5, whose sides are beveled, as at 6, while the sides of the footpiece l'are also beveled inwardly and upwardly toward the upper face 2 thereof.
A rod 7 is arranged longitudinally of the recess 5 and is designed to support the wings 8 and 9 of any suitable material. It will be observed that the wings 8 and 9 are formed of a single piece of material and that each wing is oval in formation, the connecting portion 10 of the wings being considerably nar rower than the length of the latter to correspond with the lengthof the recess 5. These wings are formed of such material as to permit their movement toward and away from each other according to the movement of the foot of the swimmer.
The reference character 11 designates a keel member which is provided with notches 12 and 13 near each end thereof for engagement in the vertical slits a of the corresponding posts 14 and 15, whose reduced ends 16 are fitted in the corresponding recesses 17, disposed fore and aft of the aforesaid longitudinal recess 5. Formed in the rear of the transverse recess 5 is a projecting lug 18, provided with. a slit 19, adapted for alinement with the said recesses and also with the grooves 20 and 21, communicating, respectively, with the front and rear ends of the longitudinal recess 5 and also arran ed inalinement with the said recesses 17. t will be observed that this keel member has its upper edges adjacent the posts 14 and 15 beveled to fit correspondingly-beveled front and rear ends of the under face of thefootpiece 1 with the rear upper edge of the keel member, also formed to engage in the slit 19 of the projecting lug 18; In other words, the upper edge of the keel member 11' is so formed as to fit in the grooves and recess of the under face of the foot-piece 1 and tightly against the remaining portions thereof. It will be seen, too, that the keel member 11 is of greater length than the foot-post 1. In the use of the device the foot-piece is applied to the foot in any suitable manner, and 0bviously by reason of movement of the swimmers footthe wings 8 and 9 of the appliances will move backwardly and forwardly, and thereby greatly aid the swimmer with refer ence to speed.
\Vh at is claimed is .1. A device of the character described comprising a foot-piece having a longitudinal recess in its under face, a rod mounted in the recess, wings mounted on the rod, and a keel member secured to the under face of the footpiece and arranged between said wings.
2. A device of the character described comprising a recess in its under face, a rod arranged in said recess, a pair of Wings constructed of a single piece of material and supported upon said rod, forward and rear- Ward posts depending from the under face of the foot-piece at opposite ends of the said recess, and a keel member secured to said posts and extending between said In testimony whereof I affiX my signature 111 presence of two v ltnesses.
