MARY JANE SMITH, OF LENORA, KANSAS.
THINIBLE ATTACHMENT.
Speeeaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
Application filed March 15, 1906. Serial No. 306,273.
To all whom t may concern.'
'Be it known that I, MARY JANE SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing a Lenora, in the county of Norton and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thimble Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists of a simple attachment for thimbles for` sewing purposes to facilitate quick cutting of thread on the part of the user of the article.
The invention comprises mainly a small band adapted to encircle the larger end portion of the thimble and applicable to any form of thimbles at present in use, said band having projecting portions to form thread-cutting members, as will be pointed out more clearly hereinafter.
The invention is very cheap and serviceable, and its great convenience in practical use will be obvious upon reference to the following description.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isa perspective view of a th`mble showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the manner of securing the attachment to the thimble. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the attachment alone.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description andindicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters. v
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the thimble, and the numeral 2 indicates the attachment comprising the invention. Said attachment, as before mentioned, consists of a simple narrow band of metal, which is preferably split so that its end portions may overlap, rivets or similar fastenings 3 being. used to attach or secure the end portions of the band 2 to the thimble. The overlapping end portions of the band 2 are provided with notches 4, in adjacent longitudinal edges, said notches admitting of interlocking the end portions, as shown most clearly in Fig. l of the drawings. -In other words, the end portions of the band 2 are connected together by reason of the fact that the notch of one end portion receives the notched portion of the other end portion. The above is not only advantageous in that it affords a temporary connection between the ends when the band is applied to the thimble initially and so riveting the same in position; but the over- Jlapping end portions project from the outer surface of the band and form cuttin members 5, which may be quickly engaged with a piece of thread in order to sever the same at the desired point. The cutting members 5 do not project sufficiently from the thimble to give rise to any inconvenience in engaging with anything which is being handled by the user of the thimble, so that no objection will arise in this particular. Said members 5 will eectively accomplish their function, however, as cutting devices.
The attachment comprising the invention may be readily applied to thimbles of all sorts, and as they can be so cheaply manufactured they will not materially increase the cost of the thimble and are no small advantage for this reason alone, aside from the convenience arising from the use thereof, as hereinbefore set forth.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In combination with a thimble, a threadcutting attachment applied thereto comprising a band having its ends notched and interlocking with one another by engagement of the notched portions, the extremities of the band projecting therefrom so as to form thread-cutting members.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARY JANE SMITH.
