MARINIUS J. BERG, 0F PORTLAND, OREGON.
WOODWORKING-TOOL.
Application filed March. 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARINIUs J. Burma citizen of Norway, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W0odworking-Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in wood working tools and relates particularly to planes.
The invention has for its primary object a simple, durable and efficient construction of device designed for ready attachment to a plane so as to constitute a guide therefor, the device being so constructed and arranged that it may be cheaply manufactured, readily applied to a plane, and held easily in either an operative or an inoperative position. And the invention also aims to generally improve this class of devices and to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plane equipped with my improved guide attachment. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the device, and, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through a portion of the plane showing the rest for holding the guide in the inoperative position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a hand plane, the same being of any desired type, construction or design, eX- cept as hereinafter noted, and 2 designates my improved guide attachment. The guide attachment 2 is, in the present embodiment of the invention, in the form of a substantially straight strip or bar 3 which is reinforced on its relatively outer face by a lon Specification of Letters Patent.

gitudinal web or rib 4t and which is formed with a plane or flat inner face 5.
The bar 3 is provided near one end with a lateral extension 6 which is formed with an apertured ear 7 designed to receive a pivot bolt or screw 8 secured to one side of the plane 1. The main portion of thebar 3 is extended relatively above the ear 7 as indicated at 9, so that it will lie in the operative position of the device, snugly against the adjoining side of the plane, the said end of the bar 3 carrying a thumb screw 10, the shank of which is designed to work in a screw-threaded opening formed for it in the adjoining side of the plane.
In order to hold the attachment in a relatively raised and inoperative position, when not required for use, I secure in one of the side flanges 11 of the plane, an angular latch or rest 12, the outer end of which projects upwardly, as indicated at 13, and the inner end of which is formed with a washer or head 14, against which a coil spring 15 is adapted to bear, whereby the spring will have a tendency to move the outer angular end 13 of the rest inwardly when the same is not required for use. Preferably, the head 14': which is formed on or secured to the inner end of the rest 12, is concave, as indicated at 16, whereby it will form a proper surface against which the operators finger may be pressed so as to move the rest outwardly for the reception of the relatively free end of the guide attachment so as to hold the latter in a raised and inoperative position.
From the foregoing description, in con nection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved guide attachment for planes will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, the bar 3 is swung downwardly along one side of the plane and the set screw 10 is turned inwardly so as to engage the opening formed for it in the adjoining side of the plane 1. Thus, the bar will serve as a side guide for the work and the plane may be easily manipulated back and forth in a straight line. When not required for use, the set screw 10 is entirely or partially withdrawn so as to disengage it from the opening in the side of the plane and the bar 3 is then swung around on its pivot 8 to an upward position, whereupon the rest 12 is pressed outwardly against t o tension of its spring 15, and the relatively free end of the bar, is engaged in the hooked outer extremity of the rest.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a simple, durable and efficient construction of guide attachment for planes which may be very cheaply manufactured and readily assembled, capable of being easily applied to the plane and adjusted thereon and not liable to get out of order.
What I claim is p 1. The combination with a plane, of a bar formed in one end with a lateral extension, the said extension having an upwardly extending aperture'd ear, a pivot received in the aperture of said ear and secured to the side of the plane, a thumb screw carried by the bar within the upper end thereof, the said thumb screw adapted to engage an opening in the side face of the plane, a spring retracted rest secured to the side of the plane and adapted to engage the relatively free end of the bar when in raised position, the said bar when in raised inoperative position adapted to extend above the lower edge ofthe plane.
2. The combination with a plane, of a bar formed in one end with a lateral extension having an apertured ear, a pivot received in the aperture of said ear and secured to the side of the plane, a thumb screw carried by the adjoining end of the bar, the plane being formed in its side face with an opening for engagement by said set screw, and a spring retracted rest secured to the side of the plane and adapted to be engaged by the relatively free opposite end of the bar, whereby to hold the latter in a raised inoperative position.
=In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
