SPRING BED-BOTTOM..
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
Application filed August 30,1906. Serial No. 332,656. l
10 all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, MATTHEW W. INGRA- HAM, a subject of the King of England, residing at Glace Bay, in the Province of Nova Scotia, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Bed Spring-Bottom, of which the following isl a specification.
This invention has relation to spring-bottoms for beds; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a device adapted to be easily and readilyoperated for taking'up the slack bulging tension of bed-springs.
The ydevice consists, primarily, of a bar to which one end of the spring is attached, and which in turn is ada ted to be connected with the bedosts. o the other end of said spring a simi ar bar is attached7 but which is mounted to slide longitudinally of guides carried by a third bar. The last said bar is provided with means for attachment with the opposite bed-posts. A screw is journaled in the last said bar and passes through the perforation inthe intermediate bar and engages a thread provided in a collar located at the middleof a yoke which bears at its upper ends upon said intermediate bar.r
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is' a bottom view ofthe bed-spring. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. f
The device comprises a bar 1, which is provided with hooks 2 2, which are adapted to pass around either the head or foot bedposts. The said bar l rests at its ends upon said Arails of the bed. One end of the bedspring 3 is attached to the bar 4. The bar 5 is provided with the hooks 6, which are adapted lto pass around the posts at the oposlte end of the bed from the posts engaged by the hooks 2. The guide-pins 7 7 are attached to th'e bar5 and .pass through perforations in the bar 4. Thesaid bar 4 is adapted to move longitudinally of the said pins 7 7. The yoke 8 bears at its ends against the side yof the bar 4. The said yoke 8 is provided at its middle with an internalthreaded collar 9. A screw 10 is. journaled A in the bar 5 and passes through a perforation 11, provided in the bar 4, and the threaded end of said screw engages the thread of the collar 9.
From the above description it is obvious that as the screw 10 is rotated the bar 4 will be drawn toward or moved away from the bar 5, according to the direction in which the said screw 10 is rotated. When the bar 4 is turned toward the bar 5, the slack of the spring 3' is taken up and the tension of the said spring is increased. The reverse is the ase when the bar 4 is moved away from the Having described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bed-spring' comprising bars, means attached to said ars for fixing the same at opposite ends of the bed-frame, a spring attached to one end of one of said bars, a movable bar located intermediate of the first said bars and being attached to the opposite end of said spring, guides carried by the bar unat- Atached to the spring and engaging' the said movable bar, av yoke bearing at its ends against the said movable bar adjacent said guides and having at its middle an internallythreaded collar, a screw j ournaled to the bar unattached lto the spring and engaging the threadoil the' collar of said yoke.
4 In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aI'IiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MATTHEW W. INGRAHAM.
