CHALKING DEVICE.
` Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. l1, 1906.
Appiimion me@ June 1,1906. serai No. 319,705.
T0 all wha/n, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PRESTON THOMAS ER- WIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resi-- dent of Everton, in the county of Dade and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Chalking Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to chalking devices and it is especially useful in connection with devices of this class used by carpenters or masons to apply chalk to cord and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a chalking device which is simple, inexpensive to manufacture, and efficient in operation, and which permits the chalk to be applied to a cord expeditiously and in a cleanly manner.
The invention consists in the construction and combination ofparts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my invention, showing it in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a blank from which a part of the device is formed. Fig. 3 is a plan of a blank from which another part of the device is formed, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line f1 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I provide a tubular body 1, which may be formed from a blank 2, of sheet metal or other suitable material, as shown in Fig. 2. The blank 2 is substantially rectangular in form and has at one extremity thereof an extension-tongue 3, substantially circular in form and joined to the body of the blank by means of a narrow neck i and has the end opposite to that at which the extensiontongue 3 is located turned back upon the body of the blank. When the blank is rolled or otherwise suitably shaped to form the body 1, it will be understood that the portion turned back, as shown in Fig. 2, will be upon the outside of the tubular body and form an offset. This offset is provided with threads 5 for a purpose to be described hereinafter. The tongue 5 is laterally disposed across the open end of the tubular body 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The neck 4 permits the tongue to be oiset from the end of the tube, and thus there is formed between the tongue and the end of the tube a recess 6,
adapted to receive the cord 7 to ybe chalked. The tip of the laterally-disposed tongue 3 is bent outward into a slight curve 3a, as shown in Fig. 1, to facilitatethe introduction of the coro. 7 into the recess 6. The chalk 8, .preferably in the form of a stick, is placed in the tube and projects into the recess 6.
Fig. 3 shows a blank 9 of similar material to that of blank 2, having a circular extension 10, from which is formed a cap 11 by rolling or other means, which is provided at one end with internal threads 12. Located inside this cap I provide a helical spring 13, which is soldered to the closed end of the cap formed by the laterally-disposed extension 10. The cap 11 is adapted to be screwed onto the body with the spring projecting into the body and abutting against the chalk stick 8, thus forcing the latter in the direction of the recess and pressing it against the cord 7 to be chalked as the latter is drawn back and forth in the recess. As the threads 5 are offset upon the end of the tube l the cup 11 may be screwed onto the body beyond the threads 5, and as the internal'threads 12 may be formed inside of the cap of any desired length limited by the dimensions of the cap it will be possible to cause the spring 13 to project for a considerable distance into the tube 1 by screwing the cap 11 down upon the tube 1 as far as possible. It will be understood that the tension of the spring and the pressure of the chalk against the cord can be regulated by screwing the cap a greater or less distance onto the body. As the chalk wears away the cap can be tightened similarly to hold the chalk firmly against the cord or laterally-disposed tongue 3, which is adapted to act as a stop to prevent the chalk from projecting too far from the body.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A chalking device comprising a tubular body adapted toreceive a stick of chalk and having an integral offset tongue at one extremity, said tongue being laterally disposed toward the opening at an end of said body to constitute with said end a recess adapted to receive a cord, and an adjustable spring within said body adapted to force said chalk into said recess.
2. A chalking device comprising a tubular body adapted to receive a stick of chalk and having a recess at one end thereof adapted to receive a cord, a cap mounted at the oppo- IOO IIO
site end of said body and adjustable longitudinally of said body7 and a spring within said cap adapted to project into said bodyto force said chalk into said recess.
3. A chalking device comprising a tubular body adapted to receive a stick of chalk and having an integral oset tongue at one eX- tremity, said tongue being laterally disposed toward the opening at the end of said body to constitute with said end a recess adapted to receive a cord, a cap mounted at the opposite end of said body and adjustable longitudinally of said body, and a spring within said cap and projecting into said body and adapted to force said chalk toward said recess.
4. A chalking device comprising a tubular body adapted to receive a stick of chalk and having an integral offset tongue at one eX- longitudinally of said body whereby the ten- 3o sion of said spring may be varied.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PRESTON THOMAS ERWIN.
