Description
UNITED snares PATENT OFFICE.
BARREL-PRESS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 4, 1906.
Application filed December '7I 1905. Serial No. 290,857.
To 00% whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM P. ROBIN- SON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Henderson, in the county of Henderson and State of Kentucky, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Barrel- Presses; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of my invention as applied. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the bar 16 and lever s. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the pressurehead f and brace t.
The invention relates to barrels for holding sauer-kraut for retailing in stores; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
The object of the invention is to keep the sauer-kraut pressed down in the barrel in order that it may be preserved in good condition and in compact form for delivery to customers.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a designates a barrel in which the sauer-kraut is contained. To the chime of this barrel is attached an up right arm I), having a ratchet c on its outer surface. The lower end of the post is bifurcated, as at d, to engage the chime of the barrel, and set-screws c are provided through the outer branch of the bifurcation to hold the arm I) securely in position.
The barrel is provided with a cover or pressure-head f, which consists of a rear part g and a front portion h, which is hinged to the rear part and is designed to be raised when it- 1s necessary to make service to a customer. To the post 9 is connected an upright bar by means of a dovetail foot m, which engages a dovetail bearing 11. of said post. The bar 1c is in this manner made detachable from the pressure-head. This bar is provided with bearings p on its inner surface for the attachment of the loop 9" of an operating pawl-lever 8, designed to engage the ratchet c of the barrel-arm b. The bar it is also .provided with a notch-bearing 9, designed to engage the end of a brace 75, which is pivoted to the movable portion h of the head. The head f, as usually constructed, consists of a smaller segment 9 and a larger segment h. The smaller segment is provided with parallel cleats e, which form the dovetail bearing for the foot of the upright bar is. The larger segment is provided with a cleat w, to which the lower end of the brace 25 is pivoted. The cleat w is of the same width as the cleat o, and to the sides of said cleat w are attached the lateral straps 2, which extend to the sides of the cleat o, to which they are pivoted by means of headed pins u. This hinge is not liable to be injured by the brine. WVhen the movable portion of the pressure-head is to be raised, the brace is disengaged from the notch-bearing q and this brace and the movable portion of the head turned back against the upright bar, where they will remain, as the main portion of their weight is thrown back of the pivoted ends of the strap-hinges. When this movable portion of the head is closed down and the brace engaged with the upright bar, the head is pressed down in the barrel on the sauer-kraut by means of the pawllever and ratchet-arm. In this manner the kraut is kept in good condition until the barrel is empty.
The parallel cleats v, to which the lateral hingestraps ,2 are pivoted, and the cleat w, carrying said hinge-straps, may be consid* ered as a two-part cross-bar, said straps or hinge projections being laterally pivoted to the smaller portion of the crossbar.
Having described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pressure-head attachment for barrels having in combination, a head composed of two hinged sections, an upright bar attached to one of said sections, a brace between the other section and said upright bar, a ratchetbar adapted to be attached to the barrel, and a pawl-lever device having an adjustable connection with said upright bar and engaging the ratchet-bar.
2. A pressure-head attachment for barrels having in combination a head composed of two hinged sections, an upright bar attached to one of said sections and having a plurality of notches a pivoted brace between the other section and said upright bar, a ratchet-bar adapted to be attached to the barrel and a pawllever device having an adjustable link connection with one of the notches of said upright bar and engaging the ratchet-bar.
3. A pressure-head attachment for barrels,
ICO
having in combination a head, having an upri ht bar, a ratchet-bar adapted to be attached to the barrel, and a pawl-lever device having a' longitudinally-adjustable connection with said upright bar and engaging the ratchet-bar.
4. A pressure-head attachment for barrels, having, in combination a head composed of two sections, having a two-part top cross-bar provided With lateral hinge-straps, an upright bar having connection with one of the sections of the top cross-bar, a brace pivoted to the other section of the top cross-bar and WILLIAM P. ROBINSON.
