UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH J. SWAIN, OF MONTEVALLO, ALABAMA.
BARREL-TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,063, dated July 11, 1882.
Application filed May 10, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. SWAIN, of Montevallo, in the county of Shelby and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Barrel-Truck, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of the application of a cant-hook to the ordinary hand-truck used for handling boxes, barrels, bales, and other heavy packages, by which the labor of tilting the goods back on the toe of the truck against the irame is greatly facilitated, as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved truck, together with a barrel shown in dotted lines to illustrate the operation of the attachment; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section.
A represents the frame, B the wheels, 0 the toe, and D the handles, of an ordinary handtruck such as is employed for handling heavy objects by tilting them upon the toe (J against the frame A, the upper end of the said object being pulled back against the frame by hand, which is very hard work when heavy boxes and other objects are being handled. I therefore propose to attach a cant-hook, E, to the frame, so that it can be engaged with the upper end of the barrel F, orother object, as shown, to enable the operator to tilt the truck Model.)
back and pull the load onto it by the application of. both hands to the upper ends of the handles, thus enabling him to have much greater command of the truck, besides greater leverage, than in the common method of operation, which consists of manipulating the truck with one hand and pulling on the load with the other hand; and in order to enable the cant-hook to be shifted up and down on the truck for setting it suitably for the height of the object to be handled I pivot said hook to a block, G, fitted to slide up and down on a middle bar, H, of the truck-fame, which has a toothed rack, I, fitted to its under side, the said block being provided with a pawl, J, to hold it wherever it may be set, and the pawl having a spring, K, to keep it in connection with the rack, and a handle, L, to detach it from the rack when it is desired to shift the hook. It will be seen that by the use of the hook the truck can be used to better advantage than without it.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of cant-hook E, sliding block G, ratchet I, and pawl J with a barreltruck, substantially as described.
JOSEPH J. SWAIN.
