Description
| E.- A. TUTTLE.
Exercising-Machine.
No. 225,736. Patented Mar. 23, 1880 PE ERS. FHQTO-LITNOGPAPHER WASHINGTON. a C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD A. TUTTLE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
EXERCISING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,736, dated March 23, 1880. Application filed September a, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD A. TU'r'rLE, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Exercising-Machine, which is fully described in the annexed specification.
My invention consists of a contrivance of lovers and handles with the platform, whereby the elevation of the person of the operator may be effected by pushing downward on the handles, the object being to afford exercise to the muscles not brought into action by the common lifting process; and it also consists of apparatus for this method of exercise and the ordinary lifting apparatus, combined with one and the same platform, thereby afi'ording both methods of exercise in one machine.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved exercising-machine. Fig. 2is a plan view.
A is the platform, which is pivoted at B to a pair of levers, G, which have their fulcrums at D in standards E of the base F, with which are the usual parallel bars K, to keep the plat-- form level, and at the opposite side of pivots B levers G are provided with a pair of liftinghandles, G, in about the same arrangement as exercising -machines now in use for lifting oneself while standing on the platform at 0, said handles being adjustable along the slotted portions H of the levers to vary the leverage.
To the machine thus constructed 1 make the extensions I of the levers 0 beyond the fulcrums D-that is, opposite to the pivots B and handles G-and attach to said extensions the pushing-handles J, the same being located suitably for the convenient use of the operator, when on that end of the platform at P, to elevate it with himself thereon by pushing downward on said handles and in order to secure these handles in an upright position, to prevent them from turning out of line, as they would if pivoted to a single lever, I have arranged the extensions Q of the bars K parallel with extensions I of levers O, and coupled the lower portions, L, of said handles to both of said extensions, which maintains the handles in vertical lines with sufficient rigidity while the levers swing up and down. To shift them along the levers they are pivoted to the slides M, fitted in the slots of the levers and provided with clamp-screws N, to set them at any point. The bars K are pivoted to standards E, like the main levers G, and to brackets It, projecting from the platform.
Thus I provide a machine whereon one can raise himself either by lifting or pushing downward, and exercise two diiferent sets of muscles, with but little more expense than of a machine for either purpose alone, and two persons can exercise on this machine at once.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an exercisingmachine, the pushinghandles J, coupled with the levers O on that side of the fulcrum opposite the pivotal connections with the platform, whereby the operator is enabled to raise said platform, on which he stands, by simply pushing down on the handles, as described.
2. The parallel bars K, extended beyond the fulcrums, along the levers O I, to the pushinghandles, and said handles connected to them and to the levers U I, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the platform A, levers C I, and the parallel bars K, of liftingha-ndles G on one side of the fulcrum D, and pushing-handles J on the opposite side, substantially as described.
EDWARD A. TUTTLE.
