BARREL- SPECIEIC'A'IION forming part of Letters Application filed July .18, 1887.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIM'EON TURNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at YVarren, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BarreLLifters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereomwhich form a partof this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in barrel-lifters, the objectof my invention beingto provide means whereby barrels or other objects may be readily elevated and moved 5 and my invention consists more especially in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device for elevating barrels, the same being constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View.
A A refer to diverging beams which are provided on their under sides with casters or rollers aa, upon which the base 13 is rigidly secured, said base being rigidly secured to the beams A at their rear ends, where said beams converge toward each other.
To the center portion of the base 13 are se cured upright posts C- (J, these posts being connected to each other at their upper ends by a cross-piece, D, which has a central opening therein, through which the rack-bar B may pass. The lower portion of this rack-bar has rigidly secured thereto guides e e, which overlap the edges of the posts, so as to secure the ment of the same.
The cross-piece D is provided with bearings d d, which are suitably attached thereto, said bearings having eyes through which pass a pintle upon which swings a pawl, F, said pawl being adapted to engage with the rack-bar E, so as to hold the samein an elevated position.
Serial No. 245,536.
OF SAME PLACE.
LlFTER.
Patent No. 380,640, dated April 3, 1888.
(No model.)
The pawl F is provided with asnitable operating-handle, f, as shown.
The posts 0 O, hereinbefore referred to, are thoroughly braced by inclined braces which aresecured to the base Band to the upper ends of the posts 0 G. Projecting from the rear sides of the posts 0 G are blocks G G, which are provided with inclined slots g, through which passes the pivot-pin hof a lever, H, said lever having a curved head which is provided with teeth which engage with the rack-bar. The slots g g incline slightly downwardly, so that when the teeth on the head of the lever H engage with the teeth of the rack-bar the pressure will hold them securely in engagement.
From the blocks G G to the base 13 extend rods or bars I I, which not only serve as braces for the blocks G G, but also serve as a means for connecting sliding blocks K to the elevating device. These sliding blocks K have at their front ends vertical perforations through which the bars I pass, and their rear ends are vertically slotted, and within the slotted portions are secured by rivets in it handles L L. These handles can be held in a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1, by means of pins Z, or in a nearly horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2. hen these handles are secured in a horizontal position, their ends are adapted to come in contact with the floor, and will serve as a brace for the frame. The blocks to which the handles are pivoted can be adjusted vertically, so as to satisfy the height of different persons in shoving or dragging the device.
To the upper portion of the rack-bar E is pivotally secured a curved arm, M, one end of which extends into the perforation in the upper portion of the raclr-bar, so that it can be turned therein. The outer end of the arm M has attached thereto a head which is provided with fourhooks, m, and an arm, N, having a perforated end which encircles the front end of the curved bar M, the opposite end thereof being recessed, so as to bear upon the perforated portion a of the rack-bar E. The hooks m have attached thereto ropes 0 0, which are provided at their lower ends with rings and books.
When it is desired to move a barrel, the ropes 0 0 are placed under the barrel adjacent to engage with the rings.
to the heads thereof and the hooks arevcaused To elevate the barrel, the lever is raised and pressed inwardly, so as to engage with the teeth of the rack-bar E, and when the same is depressed the rackbar will be elevated and will carry with it the barrel. By grasping the handles the device can be used as a truck for carrying the barrels from one place to another.
This-device is especially adapted for use in warehouses or stores, and with the same barrels may be elevated and carried from place to place, and when desired they can be readily set up on ends or heads, instead ofhorizontally, and may be stored or packed two or three tiers high.
I claim 1. In a device for lifting barrels, the combination of a base suitably mounted on casters or rollers, the posts 0, having bearings-for a lever, H, a cross-piece, D, connecting the upper ends of the posts, a rack-bar, E, pawl F,
and arm pivotallysecured to the rack-bar and provided with hooks, the parts being organized substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device for lifting and carrying barrels, a frame suitably mounted on rollers and provided with a lever having teeth formed on one end, a vertically-moving rack-bar adapted to engage with said teeth, and an arm pivotally attached to the rack-bar and provided with a braced arm, M, and head carrying a series of hooks, and means for connecting a barrel therewith, and handles pivotally secured to sliding blocks, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
