Application filed February 4, `1909. Serial No. 476,078.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. BOYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cashmere, in the county of Chelan, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to ladders and more particularly to the class of step ladders whereby the same may be supported in an upright position irrespective of the inclination or unevenness of the ground or other base upon which the ladder stands.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a ladder having a stand or base frame, the said ladder being pivotally connected thereto to permit it to swing in various angular adjusted positions and locking means for holding the latter in its adjusted position so that the same can be positioned on level or inclined grades without the possibility of the said ladder upsetting or falling to one side or the other when in use.
Another object of the invention is th-e provision of a ladder the same being pivotally mounted in a base frame, support or the like, the frame having fixed thereto an arc-shaped bar containing a plurality of openings or perforations to receive a detachable fastener adapted to engage the lower end of the ladder after being swung ,in operative position so as to lock the same in a substantially upright position when the base frame is resting on an incline or uneven grade to enable a person to ascend the ladder to reach the work to be operated upon, and the said base frame will prevent the ladder when in use from topping or tilting over.
Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of the invention and as brought out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure l is a front elevation of the invention the same being disposed upon level ground. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the ladder being disposed upon an inclined grade. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. a is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail view of the brace member showing its adjustable end.

In the drawings, the numeral 8 designates generally the base frame or stand comprising outwardly diverging supporting legs 9 the same united at their upper ends and in spaced relation to each other to a horizontally disposed top bar or beam 1() and which legs may be rigidly braced in any suitable manner if found desirable. Mounted at one side of the top beam 10 by a pivot pin or bolt l1 is a swinging ladder 12 comprising a straight bar 13 having fixed thereto a plurality of cross pieces forming steps 14 which are secured thereto in any suitable manner in spaced relation to each other.
Hinged to the upper extremity of the ladder 12 is a swinging brace or supporting bar 15 the opposite free end of which has connected thereto an extensible foot or adjustable end piece 16 which latter is held adjusted upon the brace l5 by thumb set screws 17 and which foot piece is adapted to contact or engage the ground when the ladder is arranged in operative position upon the ground.
Mounted upon the frame or stand 8 and secured in any suitable manner to the legs 9 is a downwardly curved arcuate shaped guide bar 18 containing a series of openings in spaced relation to each other with which is adapted to register an opening contained in the lower end of the bar 13 when the ladder is swung to various adjusted positions. Secured to one face of the bar 13 at its lower end is a strap iron 19 which contains an opening in register with the opening in the lower end of said bar 13 so that when the same has been swung to adjusted position it will be held therein by a locking pin or bolt 20 which passes through the registering perforations in the strap iron overlying the arcuate shaped bar 18- and also through its opening or perforation and the perforation in the lower end of the ladder, so as to prevent the same from swinging movement on its axis after having been adjusted in a substantially vertical position.
The locking pin or bolt 20 will permit the adjustment of the ladder 12 in various angular positions so that the same will be held in operative relation to the level or inclined grade as the occasion may demand.
The Operation of the ladder Will be readily apparent from the foregoing description and When carrying the invention into practice, changes, variations and modifications may be made such as come properly Within the scope of the claim hereunto appended Without departing from the spirit or sacriicing any advantages of the invention. y,
It is obvious that the brace 15 can be lengthened or shortened at Will by adjusting the extensible piece 16 to enable the ladder to be held in its Working position.
What is claimed is- The herein described ladder comprising a base stand having supporting legs and further provided With an element having adjusting openings arranged in an arc, a
bar having cross' 'pieces forming steps, a pvot connecting said bar to said stand for angular movement of the bar in a plane parallel With that of the stand, a guide element secured to the lower end of the bar and embracing opposite sides of the said adjusting element, a pin to extend through said guide element and anyone of said adjusting openings, and a longitudinally extensible brace on the rear side of said bar and having its upper end pivotally connected thereto, the axis of the pivot Which connects the said brace to said bar being at right angles to that of the pivot Which con nects` the said bar to the said stand.
