Description

W. G 0 OPER. WASHING MACHINE.
No. 83,764. Patented Nov. 3, 1868.
gatmt I new.
WILLIAM COOPER, OF GALESBURG, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 83,764, dated November 3, 1868.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
M The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part O e S To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM COOPER, of Galcsburg, in the county ofKnox, and in the State ofIlliuois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vashmg-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the I letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construe tion and general arrangement of a washing-machine, to be operated either by means of a lever or a balancewheel, as maybe desired.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side section, and
Figure 2-, a bottom view ofthe circular movable board.
A represents a square box, made ofany size and material desired, and having a hinged lid or cover, B.
Inside of said box is the rubber, formed by wooden cleats a a, fastened in circular form to the bottom thereof,
and on which works a .circularboard, O, with cleats b b corresponding to those on the bottom, as shown in fig. 2.
The circular board 0 is attached to a shaft, 0, by means of a small chain, e e, passing through a hole in said shaft, the ends of the chain being fastened to the board, to which is also attached a spiral spring, 4, which is placed around the shaft 0, and against a collar, f, on said shaft, so that the board 0 will always be pressed down on the clothes, but still have opportunity to accommodate itself to their movements on the cleats in the bottom of the box.
The shaft-c passes through the lid or cover B, and at its upper end is a bevelled pinion, H, which is driven by a segment, E, ofa cog-wheel, this being pivoted in an iron frame, D, to the lid.
The segment E has two loops, 9 g, for a lever, one near the centre, and the other near the top. There is also attached to it a pitman, I, and crank-wheel G, which are removable, and thus enables the machine to be worked by either lever or crank.
I am aware that the several parts of the abovedescribed invention, taken separately, are not new.
What I claim, is-
The arrangement of the box A, its bottom ribs, or, the board 0, with ribs 1), shaft 0, spring d, cog H, segment E, pitma-n I, plate F, and balance-wheel G, all constructed and operated as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have here unto set my hand, this 9th day of J une, 1868.
WM. COOPER.
