WILLIAM A. ALLEN, OF LECANTO, FLORIDA WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Dec. 4, 1906.
Application filed September 98,1906. Serial No. 336,603.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. ALLEN, a
. citizen of the United States, residin at Lecanto, in the county of Citrus and tate of Florida, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specificaadapted to engageratchets provided in the head, and thus cause the head to rotate as the handle is turned. The head is provided with parallel jaws which are adapted to slide upon the guide c'ariied by the head. A right and left threaded screw engages the said jaws and is adapted to open and close the same.
the accompaniying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevatlon 0 one end of the wrench, showing parts in section. Fig. 2 embraces a pers ective view of the several parts unassem led.
The wrench comprises the handle-stock 1, to the outer end of which the head 2 is pivoted. The head is provided on its under side' with. 1 a series of concentrically-arranged ratchets 3. The awls 4 4 pass transversely through the stool 1 and are provided with the handles 5 and the reduged portions 6, said portions 6 being cylindrical. The flat spring 7 is attached to the pivoted pins 8 and is provided at its ends with the recesses 9 9, which receive the reduced cylindrical portions 6 of the said pawls 4. The inner ends of the said pawls 4 are beveled, as at 10, and said beveled ends are adapted to engage the ratchets 3 of the head 1. The nut 11 is screwed upon the end of the pivot-pin 8, and the washer 12 .is interposed between the said nut and the spring 7. The outerface of the head 1 is provided with the parallel channels 13 13. The lugs 14 are attached to the edge of the head 2 and arediametrically opposite each other and located adjacent the outer ends of the channels 13 13. The upper ends of the said lugs 14 are provided with the rounded shoulders 15, and the substantially semicircular guide 16 rests at its ends upon said shoulders 15. The jaws 1 7 17 are provided with transversely-extending apertures 18, which receive the said guide 16. The.
lower ends of said jaws are provided with the lugs 19, which enter the channels 13 13. The lower portions of the inner face of said jaw 17 are cut away, as at 20, and are provided with the transversely-extending threaded perforations 21, which receive, respectively, right and left screw threads of the screw 22. The ends of said screw 22 are journaled in the lugs 14 14, while the middle of said screw is provided with the milled nut 23.
From the foregoing description it is obvious that the jaws 17 17 maybe spread apart or brought together by manipulating the screw 22 to fit any size of nut and that by disposing the beveled ends 10 of the pawls 4 away from the direction in which it is desired that the nut should be screwed the two may be used as a ratchet-wrench and as such may be adjusted to operate ineither direction.. At the same time an implement of substantial nature and I devoid of delicate parts is shown. I
Ilaving described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.- A wrench comprising a handle-stock, a
- head pivotally mounted thereon and being provided in its underside with a series of concentrically-ar aged ratchet-teeth, pawls carried by the handle-stock and having a nut adapted to-engage the said ratchet-teeth, said pawls being adapted to be rotated, a spring attached at an intermediate point to the pivot of the head and engaging said pawls and laterally-movable jaws mounted upon said head.
2. A wrench comprising a handle-stock, a head pivotally mounted thereon, pawl-andratchet mechanism for fixing the head with relation to the stock, said head having in its outer face parallel channels with lugs located atthe ends thereof, a substantially semicircular guide supported at its ends by said lugs, jaws having transversely-extending apertures which receive said guide and a screw journaled at its ends in the lugs and engaging threaded perforations provided in the aws.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. ALLEN.
Witnesses:
A. S. KING, 0. Y. BARNES.
