Application filed April 14,1906, Serial No. 311.809.
fio @ZZ whom it may concern: i
Be it known that l, WALTER DEsMonD onarrrimin, a subjectief the' King of Great liritain, residing at the village of "'-Tyoming, the Province of @ntario and .Dominion of Canadahave invented new and useiul Improvements in Bottle Attachments, oi' which 'the following is a speciiication.
The invention relates to an improved indicating attachment for bottles, primarily designed for use l.with bottles containing poison or the like and serving to indicate to dispenser the nature of the contents of the bottle.
The main object of the present invention is the production of an indicating device of the class described which is adapted for ready and convenient use with anybottle and which when in operative position will prevent the withdrawal of the cork of the bottle until the device is -moved to inoperative position., thereby serving to indicate to the dispenser the nature of the contents ci the bottle and preventing the accidental or unintentional-use of improper' materials in -filling prescriptions or the like.
The preferred details of structure of the present invention will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a sectional view, partly in elevation, illustrating the application of my improved indicator. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same with the bottle removed. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the device. Fig. 4 is a plan of, a slightly-modilied form of guard. Fig. 5 is a vertical section oi the same.
Referring particularly to the drawings, my improved indicating attachment comprises an annular band 1 ol' a diameterand height to wholly include the projecting portion 'of the cork 2 beyond the mouth ot the bottle 3. The upper edge of the band is vertically slitted and cut away to provide a series of' spur-sha ed projections 4, the alternate pro-- liections plane of the band, thereby providing a series of vspurs extending vertically from the upper edge of the band and a second series of spurs extending horizontally from the up er edge oi the band. The spurs thus rovi ed serve to indicate the presence of t 1e guard in the Yattempt of thedispenser to remov the cork from the bottle, thereby `advising him of the nature of the bottles contents.
eing .bent at right angles to thc- Depending from the band is an elongated stripl 5, preferably extending the full height of t e band and pro'ecting below the same, being formed at the ower end to provide an eye 6, arrangedto loosely-receive 'a spring' holding-clip 7 which preferably at the point opposite its engagement with the eye is open to provide for its engagement with the bottleneck. Diametrically opposite the hingestrip 5 l. arrange a locking-strip Si, also secured to the outer surface o1 the band l and depending below the lower edge of the band. At the lower endthe lookin -strip 8 is later ally odset or bent to provi e a recess 9, designed when the indicator or guard lis in place to engage the rim l() at the mouth of the bottle and7 secure the guard against accidental displacement. jects below the bent port-ion 9 to provi e a handle portion 1l, by which the lockingplate may be disengaged from the rim 10.
in use the band l completely envelope the projected portion of the cork and is secured in applied position by means of the lockingstrip 8, thereby preventing its accidental displacement -and insuring that the dispenser be advised of the nature oi the contents ofthe bottle when. making the initial effort to withdraw the cork. sire to use the material in the bottle, however, the guard may be removed from its po-- Ysition relative to the cork by disengaging the locking-strip 8 from the rim 10 and swinging the guard as a Whole on the hinge connection at 6 from about the cork, the guard in the inoperative position being disposed as illustrated in dotted outline in Fig. l.
The guard as a whole is initially applied to the desired bottle by causing the spring 7 to embrace the neck of the bottlc'in an obvious manner, by which construction the guard is adapted for use with bottles having necks of varying diameters within the limit of the clip, though, if preferred, said clip may be more or less Vflexible and adapted to be *manually forced int engaging position with the bottle-neck.
in the event the cork properof the bottle is provided with the ordinary flattened wing projections the band l may be manually bent into such shape as to provide for its em bracing the stopper, it being understood that the band is suliiciently Flexible to permit such operation.
Referring particularly te Figs, and 5,
Should he de- I IOO' 4 wherein g shown slighly-modiiied forni of guard, it Will be noted that the elongated strip for movably sup ortingy the springholding clip 7 and a lodging-strip are in tlns form of device formed integral of a single length of material. is' bent into an eye 12 to receive the springclip andy projecting therefrom to form a strip 1 l ingesrip- 8 in` the preferred form. The' reL yturn length coniiorms to2- the initial' projectionl for the" locking-strip and 4is passed through-the band? at apoint spaced from the exit-point and4 curved oppositely to the iirst'-4 mentioned* portion1 contact with the inte; rior surface of the band, being' at 4an approximately diametrical oppcsitej point passed through 'che-- band in alinementl with tlhe entrance of thel projection of@l the clipholding strip and' extended downward; conforming' in outline to saidf strip being previ'ously intertwisted therewith at 15l beyond the: surface of' thel band' to provide for se- One end of the material curing the inte ral-formed member in fixed relation to the and.
Having thus described' the invention, what isclaimed as new is- 1. A poison-guard for bottles comprising a clip to engage the bottle-neck, a band arranged to encircle the cork 'and of reater height than' the projecting portion t ereof,
said band having the clip.
2. A poison-guard for'bo'o'tlescomprising a clip toy engage the bottle-neck, af bandi arranged to encirclev the cork and? of ater hei ht thanl the projecting' portion t erect, said bandi having' a hinge' connection' with the clip', andr means for securing the-band in operative relation Withthe cork.
3l.- A poison-guard1forbottles comprising a bottleeengaging' clip, a band having hinge connection with t'he clip, the upper endlof the' bandi being formed! with vertically-aru ranged spur-points, and. a lockingestip depending from the band.
