Our invention relates to improvements in devices for sealing bottles and the like.
In the sale of liquor and other commodities, the original bottles and containers of the usual type may be refilled with inferior and unauthorized imitations of the original and genuine contents and resealed in imitation of the original packages whereby the refilled packages may be palmed oif and sold to unwary purchasers as genuine and original packages, to the detriment of the manufacturer as well as the purchaser. An object of our present invention is to provide means whereby it may be readily determined by inspection of the package whether the original package has been broken or opened. A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and convenient means for sealing bottles and other containers. A further object of our invention is to provide means whereby a bottle or other container may not be refilled and rescaled without detection.
We accomplish these and other objects by our present invention, a preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the neck of a bottle provided with our improved sealing means,

Figure 4 is a detail of a modified form of the device.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts, throughout the several views.
Our improved device, as illustrated in the drawing, includes a cap I of bakelite, or other material, the side wall of which has internal threads 2 which screw upon exterior threads 3 formed on the neck 4 of a bottle 5. The cap-body l is provided with an integral collar 6, towhich it is attached or connected by means of a plurality of integral spacing webs 8, 9, l0 and II, which form frangible connecting means between the body portion I of the cap I and its collar 6. The collar 6 is preferably elf-set from the vertical plane of the side wall of the cap-body so that the webs are inclined to the vertical plane. Portions of the cap-body l' intermediate the said webs 8, 9, I0 and II may be cut away as at I2 and I3 and the said webs may be scored 0r indented as at M to provide a fracture line at or adjacent the junction of the said webs and the cap-body or at such other place as may be desired, whereby portions of the webs or of the adjacent cap-body or both will fall away when broken, so that the webs may notbe easily restored to their original appearance after being broken as herein de-' scribed.
The neck 4 of the bottle 5 is preferably provided with annular shoulders l5 and 16. The shoulder I5 is positioned adjacent the base or lower edge of the body portion l of the cap I when the said cap is placed on the neck of the bottle, and the shoulder I6 is positioned to receive the lower marginal edge of the collar 6 which may be provided with a sharpened face adapted to be seated in a groove I! in the shoulder I6.
In the modified form of the device illustrated in Figure 4, an annular flange 20 on the shoulder I6 is bent up while the glass is in plastic condition, whereby a deepgroove 2| is formed above the shoulder It in which the collar 6 is seated. The upper lip 22 of the upturned flange 20 may extend above the plane of the shoulder l5 and the points of fracture of the said webs to provide a protective guard or shield. The process whereby the flange 20 is bent up, is reserved for a separate application for patent.
A gasket 19 may be provided within the cap I, in the usual manner, to prevent leakage.
The collar 6, of the cap I, is provided with a coating of insoluble and heat resistant adhesive material or bonding substance adapted to securely and permanently bond the said collar 6 to the bottle. The bottle is filled in any desired manner and the cap I is then placed thereon and screwed down to its desired seated position as shown in the drawing. The adhesive or bonding agent is then allowed to dry and set thus bonding the collar 6 permanently to the bottle neck and the bottle may not then be opened without breaking the cap. We do not limit ourselves to any particular means of securing the cap to the bottle and our invention contemplates any means whereby the cap may be fastened to the bottle in such manner that it may not be detached without breaking the cap or bottle. In the form of the device illustrated and described, the portion of the cap which is most easily broken is at the webs. To open the bottle, the cap I may be turned or rotated whereby the webs will break permitting the cap I to be removed from the bottle. These webs cannot be restored to their original appearance except at a considerable expense and to remove the cap and thereafter restore the webs so that the restoration may not be readily detected upon inspection, is impractical.
It will thus be apparent that after the seal has been broken there is provided an efficient safeguard against the re-use of the bottle as an original and unbroken package, and the fact that the package has been broken will be obvious on inspection.
The outer surface or periphery of the cap body I may be milled as at 20 to provide a convenient finger hold.
It is to be understood that the structure embodying our invention, as above described, is intended to be illustrative of the invention and that we do not limit ourselves to the details of the structure thus shown and described but that modifications and changes may be made therein without departing from the invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising in combination, a bottle, a cap thereon, a collar integral with the cap and spaced therefrom, bonding means between the bottle and the said collar, and spacing Webs between the said cap and the said collar fracture lines in the cap adjacent said spacing webs whereby a portion of the cap within said fracture lines will be broken away when the cap is removed from the bottle.
2. A device of the. character described, comprising in combination, a bottle having a neck, a grooved shoulder on the said neck an upstanding fiange on said shoulder, a cap on the bottle, a collar integral with the said cap and spaced therefrom and bonded in the said grooved shoulder, and covered by said upstanding flange, and spacing webs integral with the said cap and collar and adapted to be broken when the cap is removed from the bottle.
3. In a device of the character described, the
combination of a bottle having a mouth, a shoulder on said bottle adjacent to the said mouth, a second shoulder below the said first named shoulder, a groove in said last named shoulder, two of the walls of said groove forming an acute angle, an upstanding flange on said second shoulder extending therefrom above the plane of the first mentioned shoulder, a frangible cap on said bottle comprising a body portion and a collar portion and intermediate spacing webs connecting the said two last mentioned portions of the cap, said collar portion having a sharp edge seated in the said angular groove in the second shoulder, said collar being covered by said upstanding flange on said last mentioned shoulder, bonding means securing said collar to said bottle, and fracture lines formed in said cap adjacent said spacing webs, whereby portions of said cap adjacent said webs will be broken away when the capis removed from the bottle.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a bottle having a mouth, a shoulder on said bottle adjacent to the said mouth, a second shoulder below said first named shoulder, a groove in said second shoulder, a frangible cap on said bottle comprising a body portion, a collar portion and intermediate spacing webs connecting the said last mentioned portions of the cap, bonding means securing said collar to said bottle, and fracture lines formed in said cap adjacent to said spacing webs whereby portions of said cap adjacent said webs will be broken away when the cap is removed from the bottle.
