s claims. (Cl. 21S-38) More particularly this invention relates to a closure for a milk bottle, the general object of the invention being vto provide a new and improved closure which is simple in construction and which may be effectively secured to the bottle.
Another object is to provide a closure comprising a circular paper cover which may be positioned on top of the ,bottle and is recessed so as to extend down against the cap seat, together with a disk cap which may be applied by the machines which are ordinarily used for applying a disk cap alone.
Another object is to provide a closure comprising a. paper cover together with a disk cap, the cover being so formed that when the cap is pressed into place the edge' oi the cap expands portions of the cover into effective locking engagement with the side walls of the recess forming the cap seat.

While I have shown in the drawing and shall herein describe in detail .a preferred embodiment of the invention, together with a modication thereof, it is to be understood that I do not thereby intend to limit the invention to the specific 40 forms disclosed, but aim to cover all modifications and alternative constructions falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing the invention is illustrated as applied to a milk bottle having a neck 6 provided with an annulary lip 6 and an annular recess 'I forming a cap seat 8. The wall 9 of the recess `is generally inclined as shown so that when an ordinary disk cap is applied to' the bottle it is forced past the mouth IB in a somewhat contracted state so as afterwards to expand into the recess 1. As shown in Figs. l to 3 the invention in its preferred form comprises a paper cover I2 and a disk-like cap I3 of heavier and stiil'er material. The cover I2 has a central disk-like portion I2 adapted to engage against the annular seat 8, and an annular rim portion I2" extending upwardly from the disk portion and over the lip of the bottle and, preferably, downwardly partially around the lip of the'bottle so as to provide a protective covering. The rim portion is formed integrally with the -disk portion and has a pleat I4 formed by reverse folds I 4' and I4" so as to provide a. plurality of thicknesses of paper surrounding the edge of the cap I 3 when in its 10 seated position as illustrated in Fig. 3. The cap is preferably formed of a diameter such that it will contract sufficiently to permit the cap to be pressed through the rim portion of the cover, past the mouth I0 of the bottle, and down into en# 15 gagenient with the disk portion I2', the pleat I4 of the cover then bing expanded from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig.- 3, so that the pleat is forced into the recess 'I.
With a cap of a diameter which will just pass 20 a single thickness .of the paper cover at the mouth I,0,an effective locking of the closure to the bottle is secured. If an attempt is made to. remove the closure without first removing the cap, the several thicknesses of paper surround- 25 ing the edge of the cap enlargethis portion oi the closure so that it will not pass upwardly through the mouth of the bottle. In this way the annular pleat constitutes a locking means formed on and carried by the cover, which means 30 is contracted during the application of the paper cover to the bottle and is then expanded by the disk cap so as to interlock with the recess 'I and the inclined wall 9 thereof. Furthermore by 'providing the pleat in the paper cover lit is possi- 35 ble to compensate for the variations existing in different bottles in the distance between the shoulder 8 and the top of the lip so that the disk portion I2 may always be pressedinto engagement with the seat '8, without drawing the rim 40 portion of the coverover the lip of` thebottle and pulling the outer portion of the rim out of contact with the bottle surface.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 4 the cover is creased at I6, I1 and I8 so that the pleat, prior 45 to the insertion of the cap, extends as a bead' horizontally into the neck of the bottle. In either zcase, three thicknesses of paper surround the cap I3 when in its seated position.
The invention provides a closure embodying a 50 disk cap which may be appliedrby ordinary capping machines. The paper covers may ilrst be placed loosely upon bottles lled with milk prior totheir passage `to the capping machine, after which the disk caps may be automatically applied 55 in the,` usual manner. The construction thereby avoids the necessity of any special machine for this purpose, it being merely necessary to provide disk caps slightly smaller in diameter than those which would ordinarily be used if no paper cover were applied.
I claim as my invention:
1. A closure for a milk bottle having an annular recess formed inside the lip of the bottle to provide a cap seat, comprising, in combination, a paper cover having a depressed central portion fitting into the mouth olf the bottle and against said seat, and an annular rim portion extending upwardly from the central portion and over the lip of the bottle, said rim portion having a plurality of creases circumscribing the central portion forming a pleat adjacent said seat, and a disk cap adapted to be forced past the rim portion of the cover and into engagement with the central portion thereof so as to force the pleat into said recess and lock the closure to the bottle.
2. A closure for a milk bottle having anannular recess formed inside the lip of the bottle to provide a cap seat and an inclined wall adjacent said seat, comprising, in combination, a paper cover having a central depressed disk portion fitting into the mouth of the bottle and against said seat, and an annular rim portion extending upwardiy from the disk portion an'd over and partly around the lip of the bottle, said rim portion havv roi the cover andinto engagement with the disk portion thereof so as to expand the pleat into said recess and lock the closure to the bottle.
3. A closure for a milk bottle having an annular recess formed inside the lip of the bottle to pro, vide an annular cap seat, comprising, in combination, a paper cover having a depressed central disk portion tting into the mouth of the bottle and against said seat and an annular rim portion ex'. ending upwardly from said central portion and over the lip of thebottle so as to form a protective covering therefor, a disk cap adapted to be forced past the rim portion of the cover and into engagement with the central portion thereof, and an annular preformed bead on said cover adjacent said disk portion adapted to be expanded by said disk cap into interlocking engagement with the recess so as to prevent removalof the closure Without first removing the cap.
4. A closure for a bottle having an annular recess formed inside the lip of the bottle to provide a cap seat, comprising, in combination, an annular paper member overlying the lip of the bottle and extending downwardly into said recess to a position adjacent said seat, and a disk cap adapt ed. to be forced through the opening formed by the lip of the bottle and into said recess, said paper member having an annular doubled over portion adjacent said seat adapted to be expanded into said recess by said disk cap to lock the closure to the bottle.
5. A closure for a milk bottle having an annular recess formed inside the lip of the bottle to provide a cap seat, comprising, in combination, an annular paper member overlying the lip of the bottle and extending downwardly into said recess to a position adjacent said seat, and a disk cap adapted to be forced through the opening formed by the lip of the bottle and into said recess, said paper member having an annular pleat adjacent said seat adapted to be expanded into interlocking engagement with said recess by said disk cap. 6. A closure for a container having an annular recess formed inside the lip of the container to provide a cap seat comprising, in combination, a paper cover having a depressed central portion fitting into the mouth of the container and against said seat and an annular rim portion extending upwardly from said central portion and over the lip of the container so as to form a protective covering therefor, a disk cap adapted to be forced past the rim portion of the cover and
