Patented June 4, 194% UNITED STATES BOTTLE Maximilian Leviseur, Springs, I Transvaal, Union of South Africa Application June 8, 1938, Serial No. 212,572
1 Claim.
This invention relates to non-refillable containers or bottles, the primary object of the inventionbeing to provide means for sealing the mouth of a bottle in such a waythat the seal must be destroyed to permit the contents thereof to be poured therefrom, to the end that a refilled bottle or container originally sealed in accordance with the invention may be readily detected. 7
sealing means including a split expansible ring member adapted to clamp the sealing member in an annular groove formed in the neck of the bottle in sucha way as to insure against the removal of the seal.
With the foregoing and other objects in view,
which will appear as the description proceeds,
the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of partsand in the details of con struction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein described,
' may be made within the scope of what is claimed,
without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure l is a vertical sectional view through a bottle neck equipped with a-seal, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through a modified form of the invention.
Figure 4; is a further modified form of the invention wherein a cork is also employed with the seal.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line lie-5 of Figure 4.
Referring .to the drawing in detail, the neck of a bottle is indicated by the reference character 5 the inner surface of the neck of the bottle being formed with an annular groove 6.
This groove ii provides a seat for the sealing member i, which is constructed of any suitable material such as tin-foil or the like which may be readily punctured to permit the contents of the bottle to be poured therefrom.
In the formation of the seal, the seal is out in circular formation and of a diameter greater than the diameter of the bottle neck so that the edge of the seal will fold upwardly to be engaged by the split ring 8 of a diameter greater than (Cl. 215-s-8) the diameter of the mouth of the bottle so that in order to position the ring 8, the ring 8 must be compressed when forced into the mouth of the bottle, with the result that ring 8 will expand into the groove 6, forcing portions of the seal into the groove, securing the seal against removal.
The cap, which is indicated by the reference character 9, is-of the usual crimped cap struc- Another object of the invention is to provide a becoming broken by air being forced against the seal in positioning the stopper.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, a bottle or container may be sealed in such a way that the contents of the bottle may be removed only by destroying the seal, whereupon a refilled bottle equipped with the seal, will be readily detected.
I claim:
The combination with a container having a neck formed with an annular groove in the wall thereof, said annular groove being disposed an appreciable distance below the mouth of the container, of a seal comprising a disk-like body portion constructed of thin perishable material, positioned in the neck of the container over the an nular groove, said disk-like body portion being of a. diameter greater than the diameter of the neck of the container in which the body portion is positioned, whereby the edge of the body portion will extend upwardly overlying the annular groove, a'split ring expansible within the neck of the container whereby the upturned edge of the disk-like body portion is forced into the groove stretching the disc-like body portion, and a sealing material overlying the split ringcompletely covering the inner edge of the ring.
