Description

PATENTED NOV. 13, 1906.

OIL CUP.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.2.1906.
@wmwboz Jcob Mme JACOB HUBER, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
OIL-CUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1906.
Application filed March 2, 1906. Serial No. 303.883-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB HUBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cups; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for securing closures of receptacles in place. It is particularly adapted for oil-cups of the nature shown and described herein.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple and efficient means of holding the bail in place over the cover to secure the latter upon the receptacle.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of an oil-cup provided with my improved cover-locking device. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a broken sectional view down through the bail, spring-pressed lug, and its seat and Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken transversely through the bail at the point where the notch is located.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 is the receptacle. The bail 2 is hinged to projecting lugs 3 and is provided with upwardly-slanting wings or ears 1, extending laterally therefrom near the middle thereof. The under surface of the bail between said Wings is notched, as at 5, to receive the rounded end of the spring-pressed lug 6, seated in a projecting stud 7 1n the center of the top 8 of the cover. The lug 6 is so mounted on its seat that it may rise sufficiently therefrom to engage the bail; but it cannot become wholly disconnected from said stud 7. In order to accomplish this purpose, the lug is provided with grooves 10, into which project pins 11, through the stud 7. The pressure of the spring retains the lug in engagement with the recess or notch in the bail, thus effectively holding the cover in lace. Lateral pressure when brought to ear on the edge of the bail dislodges the lug from the notch and the bail may be turned down, leaving the cover free to be removed from the receptacle. When it is wished to place the bail in engagement with the lug again, said bail is pressed over the lug, either To secure the cup in such position, the
threaded section 13 is first screwed into the hub, then the cup is placed in position with its stud 12 in line with the section 13, and the union-nut is applied and turned onto the adjacent ends of said stud and threaded section.
I claim 1. The combination with a receptacle and a cover therefor, of a bail pivoted to said receptacle and having a notch in the under surface thereof and a wing extending at an incline from said bail, said cover having a lug adapted to engage said notch.
2. The combination with a receptacle and a cover therefor, of a bail ivoted to said receptacle and having a note in the under surface thereof and a wing extending at an incline from said bail, said cover having a spring-pressed lug adapted to engage said notch.
3. The combination with a receptacle and a cover therefor, of a bail 'voted to said receptacle and having 'a notch in the under surface thereof and a pair of wings extending at inclines on opposite sides therefrom, said cover having a lug adapted to ride up said wings and engage saidnotch for the purpose specified.
4. The combination with a receptacle having a left-hand-threaded stud, a right-hand threaded connection, a union-nut connecting said connection to said stud, and a cover for said receptacle, of a bail pivoted to said receptacle and having a notch in the under surface thereof and a wing extending at an incline from said bail, said cover having a lug adapted to engage said notch.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB HUBER.
