STOPPER ATTACHMENT FOR TOBACCO SACK APPLIUATION FILED SEPT. 7.190s.
WWI/E8858: INVENTOH G2 W J IJZ O/ @4604? I ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOE.
WILLIAM LORAINE FROSS, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PIERRE BARNES, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
STOPPER ATTACHMENT FOR TOBACCO-SACKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1906.
Application filed September '7, 1905. Serial No. 277,314.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LORAINE FRoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stopper Attachment for Tobacco-Sacks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of devices embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, shown attached to a sack; and Fig. 3 is a sketch-view illustrating the manner of using the invention when filling a pipe with tobacco from the sack.
My invention has for its object to provide for use with a tobacco-containing sack a device of such character that it shall form an automatic closure for the sack-mouth, and which is capable of being conveniently maintainedin an open condition when it is desired to pour some of the tobacco from the sack.
The invention consists in the construction, novel arrangement, and adaptation of devices, as will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the said drawings, the reference-letter A designates a thimble constructed of wood or other suitable material. This is desirably made with a slight taper and is provided in proximity of its larger end with a peripheral groove B, whereby it is conveniently and securely attached to the sack S. A stopper C, which is desirably of globular form, is provided to close the aperture A, extending through the thimble and to provide a seat therefor. The outer end of this aperture is formed with a flaring 0r bell mouth, as at D. The stopper is attached to an elastic band E or its equivalent, which is connected at its other extremity to the thimble at or near its other end, as by a staple I, and tends to maintain the stopper in said seat and to return it thereto when the stopper is displaced.
To furnish means for positively preventing the stopper returning to its seat, I provide a notch F in the outer end of the thimble to receive the band after the stopper has been moved to the outside of the thimble, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 2.
The thimble is attached to the sack S by drawing the edge S of the latters mouth into the groove B by means of a gathering-string G, usually found or provided upon tobaccocontainers of this character. After the sack has been thus connected it may be still more reliably secured thereto by passing the string ends about the puckered end of the sack and then tying them into a knot.
When tobacco is to be poured from a sack, as into a pipe or cigarette-paper, it is placed thereabove in an inverted position and the stopper is rolled from its seat and over the edge of the thimble by a slight pressure exerted upon the stopper by the thumb or a finger of the hand which is holding the sack. The stopper being thus removed from the -thimble-aperture, the tobacco passes readily through the latter and which action can be accelerated by squeezing the bag held within the hand. While this operation is being performed, the stopper can be retained out of its operative position either by a continued finger-pressure or by engaging its band in the notch, as aforesaid. WVhen suflicient tobacco has been discharged, the ball is released by withdrawing the finger therefrom or pushing it with the latter to withdraw the band from said notch, when the resiliency of the band will cause the stopper to be drawn into its seat Within the thimble.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A stopper attachment for tobacco-sacks comprising a thimble of comparatively short length formed of greatest diameter at its base and adjacent its base with a peripheral groove arcuate in cross-section, said thirnble being eXteriorly tapered from said groove to its top and having its top edge rounded, the interior of the thiinble being flared at each of its ends, said thimble being formed with a vertical notch, a spherical stopper, an elastic band secured to said stopper at one end and having its opposite end passed around the bottom edge of said thimble along the outer In testimony whereof I afliX mysignature portion thereof and finally rigidly secured in in presence of tWo Witnesses. said groove at a point directly underlying said notch, the tobacco-bag having the edge 9 WILLIAM LORAINE FROSS' 5 of its mouth fitting in said groove and com- Witnesses:
