v MANIOURING IMPLEMENT. J
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
Application led October 23, 1920. Serial No. 418,930.
To all' whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY H. CHANDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manicuring Implements, of which the following is a specication.
l'My device relates to* a manicuring or chiropodic implement.
' The essential objects of my invention are the removal of foreign accumulations fromv the inner and outer margins of the nail; to Sever vor depress the cuticle bordering the nail; to apply to the cuticle or nail oruto both during the cleaning, cutting or depressing operation, an emollient or other liquid or fluid; to guide and distribute the liquid toand upon the larea under treatment; to .control the liquid supply; to `prevent leakage; and to insure'cleanliness of the implement.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists'of Such parts and in such combinations of partsv as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which l form a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my implement,
Fig. 2, an enlarged vertical central section of a portion of the same in open position and with the cap removed, l
Fig. 3, a section 0n line 3--3 of Fig. 2 showing the parts in closed position, and
Fig. 4, a like section of the same in open position showing the implement reversed and inclined.
Like reference characters indicate like i parts throughout the views.
My device in the form thereof herein shown comprises a hollow glass receptacle 7 provided with an open tubular mouth 8 in which is mounted a resilient lug 10 of soft rubber engaging the mouth oi3 the receptacle with sufficient tenacity to slightly resist against withdrawal. A portion of the plug extends beyond the receptacle, and the whole isprovided with a central Cylindrical longitudinal opening 12. Slidably embracing the extended portion of the member'12 is a glass cap or housing 14. -The cap adheres in a' slight degree t0 the plug 10. A cylindrical shaft 16 is provided consisting of an eduction portion 17 and an operatin portion 18. he portion 17 of glass, woo ,hard
rubber, or other material, comprises a shank 19 having a closed conical end-21. The shank is provided with a central longitudinal passage 22 communicating with a lateral opening 23 adjacent 'or in the enlargement 21. 'Ihelatter is longitudinally movable in the opening 12 of the plug. The enlargement 21 is, because of the plug, movable some distance within the latter to an extent which increases the pressure of the plug'against the mouth 8 of the receptacle insuring I against leakage when the parts are in closed position.4 An annular external rib 25 on the shank furnishes a manual hold for longitudinally reciprocating the eduction p0rtion 17 in the plug.
The Operating portion 18 of the shaft is tion portion 17. It is provided with a central longitudinal passage 27 continuous with the passage 22. The outer end of this p0rtion has an elliptical inclined or beveled face 28 extending to flattened point 29. This face 'serves to guide and distribute the liquid issuing from the passage 27 concentric with the face. When the operating portion 18 is non integral with the eduction portion 17, als herein shown, the former comprises a body 31 provided with a shoulder 32 resting upon the shank 19, and an extension 34 frictionally engaging the inner face of said shank. instance is` of orange wood, and is manually removable for substitution for sanitary purposes.
lcylindrical and continuous with the educ- The portion 18 in this When the device is in use for Operating upon the Cuticle it is desirable that the liquid contents 36 ofthe receptacle be supplied to the face 28 and point 29. In such case the Shaft 16 is manually moved through the plug 10 fromthe position shown in Fig.
3 to that shown in Fig. 4, disclosing the opening 23, and the whole implement reversed in position.
I claim 1. In an implement of the character described, a receptacle, a plug in the receptacle, a shaft closed at its inner end slidably mounted in the plug and provided with a longitudinal passage and with a lateral opening extending'V to the passage, and a beveled point upon its outer end. v
2. In an implement of the character described, a receptacle, a resilient plug vided with a smooth face engaging the Wall of thel receptacle and provided with a cylindricalopening, a shaft longitudinally moveating with the passage, and an operating point on the outer end of -the shaft. l
3. In an implement of the character described, a receptacle, a plug in the receptacle, a shaft traversing the plug provided With acentral lgngitudinal passage, and 4a point upon the end of the shaft provided with an inclined face concentric with the passage.
4. In an implement of the character "le scribed, a receptacle for a liquid, a plug frictionally positioned in the receptacle, and projecting beyond the end of the receptacle, a shaft' frictionally positioned 1n the plug and provided with a longitudinal passage for the liquid, a point upon the end of the shaft provided with an inclined face to receive the liquid, and a cap inclosing the i signature.
point adapted toyfrictionally embrace the projecting portion ofthe plug; 5. In an implement of the character described, a receptacle, a plug in the receptacle, a shaft slidably mounted in the plu provided With a longitudinal passage and with a lateral opening communicatin therewith near its inner end, an external s oulder i upon an intermediate portion of the shaft,J
and a'point 'upon the outer end.
6. In' an implementfof the character de scribed, a receptacle, a plug in the receptacle, a shaft comprising a hollow` eduction portion slidably mounted in the plug and i provided with a central passage communieating With the receptacle, land an oper-,.40
ating portion comprising a body provided with an inclined end face, and Withran extension frictionally located in the eduction portion, said body and extension being provided vvith a central longitudinal passage. 45.
In testimony 'whereof I. have aixed my .HARRY H. CHANLER.
